The Morning Show with Mike & Juliet
Atlanta Pet Rescue was recently selected to participate in a promotion sponsored by ZooToo.org to feature five of our dogs available for adoption on the nationally-syndicated Fox morning show with Mike & Juliet! The feature was called the "M&J Save the Dogs of Atlanta" and aired on Friday, July 18th.

| |
Higgins stole the show by rolling over and showing Juliet his tummy for a belly scratch.
We were worried that our pups would be scared by the noise of the audience's applause, or by the bright lights of a TV set, but they did splendidly and represented for the entire nation just how great our rescue pets are!
The five dogs featured were: Higgins (adopted), Leah (adopted), Rudy (small dog page), Catfish (small dog page), and Funky (toy dog page). Visit our web site and click on the link in the News & Upcoming Events section to see a video of the show.

Wanda
Wanda is a teenage Catahoula mix pup, we think. She's probably about 10 months old and weighs about 30 pounds. She needs to gain a few pounds because she's a bit bony but gaining weight and getting healthier every day in our care. Wanda came to us via a local shelter where she developed Kennel Cough, and as a result, her future wasn't looking good if she stayed there. She's recovered now, and is looking for her forever home.

Note from a friend: you can't tell from the photos very well (look closely) but half of Wanda's left eye is blue and the other half is a lovely light amber color! It is very unusual and quite beautiful.
Wanda did well at her photo shoot. She ran around and played with Luna, the Great Dane (adopted) as well as with Chip (toy dog page). They all had a ball together. Wanda would love to have a big yard to play in and another dog sibling would be ideal. She is super sweet and playful, as a young healthy dog should be.
Wanda also seemed to get along very well with my 18 month old little girl who was enjoying the entertainment provided by she and Luna running amok. She did not show any signs of being scared of, or anxious around an unsteady toddler. Wanda shares and plays well with all size dogs and humans alike. She will be a great companion for some very lucky family.

A True Southern Belle, by James Williams
One warm, sticky morning on June 26th I was sitting at a desk working as a volunteer at Atlanta Pet Rescue. There was a rare period of silence from the dog pens when it was broken by a solitary, long, heart-felt howl. I turned around to investigate who it was coming from...and then I saw her...it was love at first sight.
The little howler was Belle - a chocolate and white, roly-poly, cocker spaniel who arrived at the shelter the previous day. I walked up to her and she looked at me a little timidly and walked away with her head down and flopped onto one of the Kuranda beds. I went into the pen to stroke her and then read about Belle on Atlanta Pet Rescue's website.
Her previous owner in Alabama had to enter a nursing home and so Belle was given to Animal Services. By the grace of God she got a lift to the big city of Atlanta. Every time I came to the shelter to work I made a point of giving Belle some loving attention. She seemed sad, as if she was missing her former owner, and I knew that my friends, Catherine and Henry, and I could give her a good home. I told them about Belle, and initially we became Belle’s guardian angels.
We already had a cat and a dog and my friend Catherine needed to spend some time with Belle to get a feel for how easily Belle’s sweet, gentle spirit could fit in with our existing animals.

One Saturday morning, Catherine came to Atlanta Pet Rescue and instantly fell in love with Belle after spending time with her. Next, Belle passed the cat test. She was exposed to a kitty nose-to-nose - thanks to Smudge the Tortoise shell kitten! Then Belle got on well with Robbie our Malti-poo dog. I was overjoyed! The final test was to ensure Belle could be friends with Munchkin, our 8-year-old ginger timid skitty cat.
During the first afternoon of having Belle at our home, Munchkin miraculously came downstairs to eat, went outside to patrol the neighborhood, and then came home to spend a little time with his family. Belle integrated perfectly and we’re all so very happy.
Despite needing to lose a few pounds, Belle is easy to walk on a leash, marches like a trooper, and will soon be a svelte girl! She’s having to patiently learn that she won’t be fed scraps from the table, and that meals are served twice a day because her forever home is not a 24/7 self-service cafe. After just one week, Belle has lost 2 lbs in weight as a result of revised meal times and 60-90 minutes of daily walking. She’s looking slimmer and an appointment with the groomer will turn her into a lighter, cooler, and even happier little dog.
There a little separation anxiety which seems to be getting less frequent now, just as it did with Robbie. Belle scratches to tell us when she needs to potty and has a gentle, kind, and calm spirit. She’s still getting to know us and so her lap-stops are brief, however I know that she’ll be a great lap dog when she’s ready. We are so happy that she was brought to Atlanta Pet Rescue and that we adopted her because she has helped us to feel even more joy and she’ll get everything she needs, including lots of love and leadership. Thank you everyone at Atlanta Pet Rescue for all that you do and for letting us give Belle a forever home! |

Volunteer Spotlight |
|
| |
|
|
| |
Each month we will feature one of our outstanding volunteers or foster parents. Our volunteers and foster homes are so important to our organization, and we just can not thank them enough. Fostering a rescue pet is a demanding job and we are so lucky to have such a fine group of volunteers who are up to the challenge of both fostering, and working at our adoption facility as well as at special events. |

Meet Hilary!
Hilary is our Saturday keeping-everything-organized volunteer. She coordinates adopters and their applications. She answers all their questions, keeps things flowing, works well with adoption counselors, she even grooms and baths new dogs as they arrive.
Hilary works the front desk like a champ. Plus, she is heavily involved in the special events that get our name and mission out into the community. She helps at practically every single fundraiser, and even headed up our info booth at Atlantic Station over the holidays.
Anytime there is a chance to promote our mission to the public, we know we can count on Hilary to help. We love Hilary!
