Atlanta Pet Pals

Pierre with friends at Canterbury Court

Mocha, an APR alum, sharing some love

Atlanta Pet Pals first visit a success!

Recently, a group of dedicated APR volunteers spent a wonderful Monday morning sharing some of our best doggie adoptees with others who need us.

Atlanta Pet Pals, the newest community outreach program sponsored by Atlanta Pet Rescue, is a pet-related therapy. It is used to help senior citizens, terminally ill children, or those who are depressed or emotionally disturbed. The dog visits offer a comfort and companionship as well as entertainment to the participants.

APR’s Pet Pals Program involves taking several well-behaved adult dogs from our shelter, or APR alumni, to area senior citizen homes. Interacting with animals has been scientifically proven to lower blood pressure and heart rate, improve mood, lessen loneliness and isolation, and enhance well-being.

Our first visit was to Canterbury Court in Buckhead. Many of the residents were excited we were coming and participated in meeting, greeting, petting, and loving on our animals. It was a delight for them and for us!

We hope to grow this program to include other senior homes in the future.

Thank you to the following volunteers for participating in this wonderful service program: Laura Pate - program founder and committee chair; Suzanne Smith, Douglas Coghlin and Becky Guillory.

Princess

Princess is a 2-3 year old, female Chihuahua Dachshund mix. She weighs about 10 pounds, and she has sustained burns to her rear quarters.

Her former owners said she would wander the neighborhood, but usually came home. Eventually, she ended up at animal control after someone apparently poured flammable liquid on her and set her aflame. When we first got her from animal control, Princess was understandably insecure and in a great deal of pain.

Princess is fully recovered and is now a very lively girl. She has discovered the joy of toys. She absolutely loves her nyla bones and will hope to have several in her new home. Her energy is back full force and she's decided that canine companions are not so bad after all.

Princess and her foster brother chase each other around the backyard, into the house, up the stairs, down and back out again. After a long play period, she likes to cuddle up in an oversized dog bed where she looks like she's resting atop a cloud. Princess no longer shows any signs of her earlier trauma, and she's ready to start her new life.

Cassie

Hello. My mommy adopted me on March 1st! She saw my cute pictures on the web site and had to come take a look at me. When I first got home to her house I was very scared of everything and everyone. She had these two odd cats in her house too that just stared at me. I couldn't even walk up or down stairs and I did not like treats! In a couple days, my mommy taught me how to walk up and down stairs and helped my leg get better because it was hurting me really bad.

I got some good medicine and now it is all better! I love my pink bed and pink collar and leash. I am such a girly girl. My mom makes me the yummiest things to eat and she has a nice quiet backyard where I get to romp around and play! I am so happy about my new home and get wait learn and explore more of my new home! Thanks for helping me get adopted!!!

  Volunteer Spotlight

Each month we will feature one of our outstanding volunteers or foster parents. Our volunteers and foster homes are so important to our organization, and we just can not thank them enough. Fostering a rescue pet is a demanding job and we are so lucky to have such a fine group of volunteers who are up to the challenge of both fostering, and working at our adoption facility as well as at special events.

Katie Willis

Meet Katie! As an employee of Citibank, Katie qualifies for the Citi Foundation Volunteer Incentive Program. In honor of 50 hours of volunteer service to Atlanta Pet Rescue, we were awarded a grant in the amount of $500!

Not only does Atlanta Pet Rescue benefit from Katie's hard work at the shelter, but we also are rewarded with much-needed financial help as well!

Thank you Katie, for your devotion to our mission, and to Citibank for giving back and encouraging the gift of volunteerism in our community!

Volunteers - check with your Human Resources manager to see what your company is doing to reward your volunteerism! If they aren't doing anything now, encourage them to get started. Most competitive employers are interested in ways to keep their valued employees happy, and this is one way to accomplish that, while at the same time promoting themselves as responsible corporate citizens.
