Layla is in a foster home and will be available for adoption starting Wednesday, March 14th.

Layla came to us when her owners were no longer to care for her after her leg was accidentally broken.  She is a sweet, friendly and playful dog, but this type of fracture is a serious one for any dog.

Thankfully, Doctor Whittle agreed to help Layla and she had surgery on the 8th of December at Paces Ferry Veterinary Clinic to repair her broken bones in her front leg.  This was a complex surgery as this type of fracture requires either or both:  pins and plates to hold the bone fragments together.   After that, Layla was prescribed strict cage rest for six weeks to allow her bones to heal. This type of a fracture is one of the worst a dog can have.  Because so much weight is carried by a dog's front legs.

Despite all of this going on, Layla has kept her bubbly personality.  There isn't much that she doesn't love.  Layla really loves playing with toys and will sit nicely and play with them while you sit with her.  When she is completely healed we feel like Layla will be the happiest in a home that has a dog buddy and a fenced in yard that will allow her to enjoy being such a spunky lady!

Update 12/9/11: Layla's surgery went very well thanks to the wonderful staff at Paces Ferry Vet Clinic.  She will now have to go through 6 weeks of strict cage rest to ensure the pins placed in her leg heal perfectly.

Update 12/19/11: Layla went back for a bandage change, which is normal procedure during her post-surgery care.  Her leg is healing well so far!  Layla still has about 4.5 weeks left in her strict cage rest recovery, but is doing well with it.

***See Layla featured on Q100's The Bert Show!

Update 12/27/11:  We got a little bit of bad news today, Layla's leg is not healing as well as we had hoped for.  She had her splint changed by Dr. Cary at Paces Ferry Veterinary Clinic and they found that her bones have twisted, and that she has an infection at her surgical site.  Layla will be  re-evaluated next on January 5th to see if the infection has cleared, and what will be the best procedure to ensure her recovery.  Check back  to see what her plan will be.  Despite not healing very well, little Layla is still in great spirits, but does not like the restriction of cage rest.

Update 1/5/11:  Thanks to the amazing staff at Paces Ferry Veterinary Clinic Layla had surgery again today.  Her leg is starting to heal.  They re-wrapped her leg in a very sturdy splint with a fiberglass cast around it to add stability.  Layla is a fairly high energy dog, so it is important she remain calm and quiet to allow her leg to heal as well as it can.  She will undergo another 4 weeks of strict cage rest.  She will return the Paces Ferry Veterinary Clinic for a recheck next week, hopefully she will be healing wonderfully then!

Update 1/31/12:  Good news, Layla was allowed a little more freedom in her day.  She still has to be quiet and calm, but is allowed a little more social interaction, which she has missed so much.  She will go back to Paces Ferry Veterinary Clinic in 2 weeks for another recheck and will hopefully be able to have her fiberglass cast removed at that time.  She still has more healing to do, but hopefully it won't be too much longer before she can find her forever family.

Update 2/7/12: Layla is still doing great with her recovery, but needs a little more time in her cast.  She'll have a recheck the week of 2/22 and we'll know more then.

Update 2/23/12:  Sweet Layla has finally been released from the constraints of her cast.  She will need to have limited activity for the next several weeks.  We have to closely monitor her to make sure she starts using that leg.  Once we feel comfortable with her progress and she is functioning with 4 legs 100% Layla will be ready for her forever forever home.

Update 3/9/12:  Wonderful news, Layla is getting to run and play, even with other dogs!! She is building up her leg strength and doing great.  We hope to have her available for adoption next week.  Keep an eye on the website for when she will be available to go to her forever home:)  She will require a home with a fenced in backyard and another dog to make her life complete.
