a community outreach program
of Atlanta Pet Rescue
Pet Pals is a new and growing program at Atlanta Pet Rescue! Special volunteers take a few of our currently available adoptable dogs and some alumni dogs (or former adoptees) to senior residence homes. Once per month, Pet Pals visits Canterbury Court in Buckhead, Hearthstone and Freedom Pointe in Roswell, and KingsBridge in Atlanta.
The residents love to see Pet Pals coming! As most of them had a dog in their lives at one time, and are unable to have one now, Atlanta Pet Rescue offers them the chance to experience a little canine love and companionship. Pet Pals provides a wonderful outing for the little ones as well, who love all the attention!
A big thank you to our team leaders who coordinate with the activity directors at the residences and schedule the volunteers: Lauriel Leonard (Canterbury Court), Denise Davis (Hearthstone and Freedom Pointe) and Laura Pate (KingsBridge).

Red Bandanna Natural Pet Food Stores partner with Atlanta Pet Rescue to provide healthy food for shelter pets awaiting adoption.
Atlanta Pet Rescue & Adoption is proud to announce a partnership with local pet food retailer, Red Bandanna Natural Pet Food Stores. Starting on June 1, 2008, Red Bandanna Natural Pet Food Stores became the exclusive provider of pet food for the cats, kittens, dogs and puppies awaiting adoption at Atlanta Pet Rescue.
This partnership represents the annual commitment of a donation valued at over $24,300 from Red Bandanna Natural Pet Food Stores to Atlanta Pet Rescue.
Over the past several years, Red Bandanna Natural Pet Food Stores have become known to us as Atlanta’s source for Super Premium, Natural, Holistic and Organic pet food formulas for dogs and cats. At Atlanta Pet Rescue, we recognize the impact of good nutrition on the overall health and well-being of our animals. Red Bandanna Natural Pet Food Stores use only the finest quality of human-grade, nutritional ingredients. Never again will we need to supplement our pets' diets with vitamins or minerals—everything they need is in the food!
In addition to providing food for all of our pets awaiting adoption, Red Bandanna Natural Pet Food Stores have also agreed to donate one free bag of pet food to each adopter, along with coupons for additional food, treats and identification tags. The are also offering all Atlanta Pet Rescue volunteers a discount on in-store purchases.
Our heartfelt thanks go out to Red Bandanna Natural Pet Food Stores, for their generous commitment to Atlanta Pet Rescue, and their concern for the health and nutrition of all pets.

PROTECT YOUR PETS THIS JULY 4th
Although July 4th is a great time to celebrate and many people enjoy the loud noise associated with those beautiful fireworks displays, our canine companions do not often share our enthusiasm.
The noise from fireworks often leads to panic in our pooches and can result in lasting fear and occasionally death.
Dogs have been known to dig under fences and even break through glass windows in an attempt to get away from the frightening sounds of fireworks.
The number of lost dogs soars during this time of year. It is especially important if you have recently adopted a pet and do not know how she will respond to July Fourth festivities. The best thing we can do as responsible pet owners is to leave Fido at home and make sure that he is safe and secure.
There are several things you can do. Start by keeping him in his crate for the evening with a Kong or other favorite toy, keeping his mind occupied by something fun will help him forget about the loud sounds. Turn on the television or radio to provide background noise. If you are at home, give your dog a massage or play a fun game. Try to keep his mind off the noise and on you, creating a positive and rewarding experience. Most importantly, always keep proper identification on your pet as this will be your only hope for getting him back if he does get away.
SUE STERNBERG SEMINAR: Dog Behavior and Temperament Evaluation
ETHOGRAM OF THE SHELTER DOG
Learning to read these subtle and
small behaviors are the key to truly
understanding and being able to
observe dogs. Using extensive
video archives of dog behavior
footage taken during assessments
and a catalog all the responses and
common behavior patterns, this
workshop is the basis for anyone
who evaluates behavior and temperament
in dogs, whether at a
shelter or in private training consultations.
Behaviors are broken
down into small units, and multiple
examples of each behavior are
given, both in normal speed and in
slow motion.
BITE-O-METER
In order to live with, work with, and
safely handle dogs you must be
able to read their body language
and facial expressions. Aggressive
dogs tell us they are going to bite
long before they growl, snarl or
bite. This session will take you
step-by-step through the process
of interpreting the often complex
and subtle signals dogs give us.
