Farewell, sweet Duncan.

7/22/08: We took Duncan to Dr. Whittle at Paces Ferry Veterinary Hospital for an evaluation and to determine his prognosis for medical treatment to alleviate his pain and restore his mobility.  Sadly, the news was not good. After reviewing Duncan's X-rays and and examining Duncan, Dr. Whittle concluded that Duncan had so many problems with his knees and hips that he would not regain use of his rear legs and live a normal life.

As you might expect, we had to make the sad, sad decision to put Duncan out of his misery and end his pain and suffering permanently. He was a sweet pooch who should have had a better life, but puppy mill dogs often do not have good genetic backgrounds, and Duncan is a prime example of how an adorable puppy at the pet store ends up.

Duncan had a Guardian Angel!

Sugar is an 8 week old boxer baby with a boo-boo leg, as you can see. She was intercepted as her former owner was leaving her outside a remote animal control facility, thinking she could just leave her outside the door and drive away. A mobile vet was performing low-cost spay-neuters that day and observed what was happening and scooped up Sugar and took her into the air conditioned van. That simple act of kindness saved Sugar's life, because the animal control facility would have euthanized her immediately because of her injury. We got the call about Sugar and were asked to take her into our adoption program. We agreed, and Sugar came to us late on the night of July 3rd.

Sugar has a badly broken front leg, which her former owner had splinted with twigs and duck tape and a plastic sandwich bag. Unfortunately, that splint caused more harm, because it was positioned below the break, and actually made the injury much, much worse.

Sugar cries a lot and has difficulty getting around because, at 8 weeks, she is not very coordinated and the bandage is much longer than her other front leg, so she has trouble standing up.

Sugar also is deaf, which is common in white Boxers. That is a deficit on one hand, as she will require humans that will protect her from cars and other hazards she can't hear, but it is also a benefit in that she will sleep through any amount of noise and not be disturbed.

Sugar has been examined by an orthopedic specialist and he feels that Sugar's broken bones will heal in a cast, and that she won't need surgery. She will have weekly re-casting and after another 2 weeks, another set of x-rays to determine if the bones are healing. If they don't heal or are healing out of alignment, then she will need surgery to insert pins into her bones to help them heal properly.

If you can help with her medical expenses, it would be greatly appreciated. Please click on the "Sponsor Me" link below.

Sugar is not yet available for adoption.

Sugar's adoption fee is $300.

Update 7/15/08: Sugar continues to grow and be interested in the things around her. She sometimes tries to run, which she should not, but looks very cute as she trots along until she catches her toe, trips and falls over when she's out on her potty breaks.

Update 7/22/08:  One consolation in her cage rest, is that she's becoming housebroken.  She's chewing on everything in sight, and thinks newspapers are for shredding.  So much for paper training!

Sugar on 7/13/08: She's about 5 pounds heavier than she was last week!

Ashley

Mary Kate

Ashley and Mary Kate  are Golden Retriever-Labrador Retriever mixes. We estimate their age to be 7 months. These two precious girls were about to be euthanized at a rural animal control facility which had held them for nearly a month hoping someone would adopt these wonderful animals. Sadly, no one had come forward, and though several rescue groups had been called, no one had come for them yet.  It was July 3rd, and all eligible candidates at that facility were scheduled for euthanasia that day, and that included Ashley and Mary Kate. We could not drive off and leave them to face death that day, so they are now with us, and looking for forever homes.

Ashley and Mary Kate weigh about 50 pounds now, and are close to full grown. They probably ran free in their former home, and have not been taught to walk on leash and are not housebroken. At our shelter, though, they have gone outside to go potty so far, and are kept in cages at night, so they will begin learning the concept of house training.

Ashley has come down with kennel cough and is not currently available.

Mary Kate is in a foster home

and available for adoption on Saturday.

Mary Kate's foster report: Mary Kate is an extremely well behaved young dog.  She walks on a leash very well and rarely barks.  Better yet, she's hasn't had a single accident in the house!  Mary Kate loves to play with our other dogs and is also quite content being by herself with a stuffed toy.  She is affectionate and obedient towards us.  She will certainly bring a lot of joy to her forever home!

Dallas is a striking 1-2 year old male German Shorthaired Pointer.  He weighs about 60 pouonds and has been treated for heartworms.  So far he is doing beautifully, and we expect a full and complete recovery for this young dog.

Dallas is an athletic, loving dog.  We suspect he was never trained by his former owners, and that's why he was running loose and ended up at animal control.  He has shown us that he is not a runner or jumper, but really likes to be by his humans.  He will chase a ball, but for now that is off limits during his recovery phase from heartworm treatment.

Dallas is in a foster home

and available for adoption on Saturday.

Dakota is a very sweet and gentle 5 year old Bearded Collie. She is a solid girl weighing in at just under 65 pounds. Dakota came to APR by way of an outlying animal control facility. She was surrendered here by her former owner because recent changes in their jobs meant less time at home, and they just did not have enough time for her.

We think Miss Dakota is fabulous and would be a great companion for most any home.  She is quiet, calm and gets along with other dogs, both large and small. Dakota's foster mom says she is "Perfect".  Dakota is well behaved indoors, very sociable but not a pest, gets along with other dogs, is housebroken and can be trusted when left alone indoors.

Dakota is in a foster home

and available for adoption on Saturday.

Boomer is a 20-month old male Great Pyrenees. He weighs a whopping 112 pounds underneath all that hair. Boomer is a gentle giant, true to his breed.

Boomer is another of the dogs that landed in the wrong home, and eventually his family decided that although they loved him, he was just too big for a family with children and a small house.

When Boomer first came to us, we noticed he had an awkward walk. However, his former owner never made any mention of any health issues. We took Boomer to visit Dr. Whittle at Paces Ferry Veterinary Clinic.  After an thorough examination, it was determined that Boomer had an enlarged prostate, which was four times the normal size! Luckily for Boomer, all that he needed was his neuter surgery and a round of antibiotics, which was done on 6/8/08. Boomer has recovered nicely since then and is feeling much better.

Boomer was first adopted by a very nice family who had another Great Pyrenees that was older. However, Boomer has a lot of energy at his young age, and needs a playmate who can keep up with him - preferably one his size. He is also looking for a home without small children.  If you think you could provide this for Boomer, get your application in today!

Boomer is available for adoption

Tuesday through Saturday.

Luna is a lovely 3 year old deaf Great Dane. She has gorgeous blue eyes and is mostly white, except for the merle patches on her eye and ear.

Luna was picked up by animal control as a stray and never reclaimed. It appears that Luna had been used for breeding and didn't have good care in her former home because she was the color of Georgia clay and her ears were badly fly-bitten. Luna was also very under-weight.

Luna is a sweet girl with big dreams for her future. She is very gentle and quiet, loves to snuggle and knows the Great Dane "Lean". Luna gets along well with other dogs but loves people best of all.  She walks beautifully on leash, and will nuzzle your hand for a pat on the head to let her know she's loved.

If you can help Luna's dreams come true, submit your application today.

Note from a friend: Luna was an absolute doll at her recent photo shoot. She had a blast playing with Wanda (medium dog page) and even Chip (toy dog page)! She would love a big yard to run and play in. She is very affectionate. She bonded with our photographer, Leesia, just in the few hours they spent together. You can tell she longs for a family of her own. She will be a loyal and devoted family member for that special, very lucky family.

Luna is available for adoption

Tuesday through Saturday.

Luna's adoption fee is $300.

Sebastian is a 1-2 year old, 52 pound Boxer who thinks he's a 10-pound pup. He came to Atlanta Pet Rescue from a local animal control facility where he had been surrendered by his previous owners. Sebastian is a great dog. He seems to be very social and has been eager to meet everyone he sees. Sebastian also has a wonderful big dog lean and is sure to be a great companion.

Sebastian is a sweet dog and would not hurt a fly, however, he has never had anyone to show him how to be a well behaved canine companion. The areas where he needs work yet is in staying calm and not jumping up. Sebastian seems so starved for affection that he wants to jump into your lap whether you want him to or not. These are behaviors that can be corrected through training, and we expect Sebastian will be a quick study.

He will need an forever home that will give him regular daily exercise--a requirement for his breed. A fenced yard is always a plus. Sebastian promises to be a wonderful lifetime companion to whoever will take the time to show him what he needs to know to be the perfect gentleman!

Sebastian is available for adoption by appointment.

Sebastian's adoption fee is $300.

Merlin is a stunning 2 year old 150 lb merle Great Dane. When he first came to APR as a 10-month-old puppy, he was adopted by nice people who loved him. But as he got bigger and more energetic, he became too much for them. When they had a baby, Merlin found himself back at APR.

Merlin is super sweet, affectionate, and a master at the famous "Great Dane lean". He LOVES his people and will make you feel loved and appreciated. In addition to cuddling, his favorite activities are playing in the hose (he is crazy for water), playing fetch/catch, running around with our dogs, chewing his toy, going for walks and rides in the car. He is obedience trained, but will need someone who will continue with this.

Merlin has special needs: he is leash aggressive. Although he loves to meet people and other dogs in the house - he does not like to meet them when he's on leash (or especially when the other dogs are on leash). He also has issues with people walking dogs past the car when he's in it. We have worked on these behaviors with the generous help of trainer Amber Burkhalter, K9-Coach, and the behaviors are under control with his foster parents.

Merlin will need a special person dedicated to continue training in his new home. He will take some work but he is worth every minute. A securely fenced backyard is a must for this guy!

Merlin has a video of his foster mom working with him. http://merlinthedog.blogspot.com/

Merlin is in a foster home and available for adoption on Saturday or by appointment.
