Mitch is a 1 year old male Shih Tzu. He weighs about 17 pounds and is full grown and very solid. Mitch is good with other dogs and will be a great pet for anyone.
He still needs work on his housebreaking skills, but should be a quick study for someone who will be consistent and reward good behavior. A crate would definitely help in this effort, too. Mitch was allowed to run loose too much, and as a result is now confused about what he's supposed to do and where he's supposed to do it.
Mitch is available for adoption
Tuesday through Saturday.

Tinker is a handsome young Shih Tzu with very pretty markings. He weighs 16 pounds and is about 1 year old. Tinker has a wonderful thick coat and an outgoing, friendly disposition. He has the cutest tail that curls over his back and then the hair splits in half with one half going over each of his hips. To make it even cuter, the end of his tail is white, so it really shows up and is a striking pattern.
If you want an eye-catching sweet pooch, Tinker is your guy!

Stanley is a Chinese Crested Dog. He is 1 year old and weighs 16 pounds. He and his friends came to Atlanta Pet Rescue from a breeder who was downsizing. Stanley was a bit intimidated by the camera, but has since come out of his shell, and is playful, prancing and almost pretty. Almost.
Chinese crested dogs are merry, loving and friendly. Depending on the amount of hair, they are also easy to groom. They do, however, need regular care to keep their skin soft and supple.
Stanley was neglected in his former home and will need extra attention to return his skin to the soft supple texture that it should be. Stanley would be happy to go for walks, play with toys or simply curl up for a good snooze.
Stanley is in a foster home and available
for adoption on Saturday.

Spud is a charming 1.5 year old, 25 pound Terrier mix that was rescued from an outlying animal control facility. This poor boy was malnourished and infested with wood ticks from head to toe when he came in.
Despite from his obvious neglect Spud is a very sweet and affectionate boy. He gets along well with other dogs and loves being around his human companions.

Coco is an unidentifiable Corgi-esque cute mixed breed pup. She is another of the little ones that just "show up" in the park and have no owner looking after them. A Good Samaritan took Coco in after the person who found her realized she had no owner and decided not to keep her after two months. From there, Coco came to us.
Coco is probably 6-8 months old and weighs 17 pounds. She might reach 18-19 pounds when she stops growing. Coco is great with dogs and cats, and is learning basic obedience commands. Coco is playful and affectionate. She shows no indication of being mistreated in her past. Coco is confident and friendly with strangers, and willing to give unconditional love to anyone.
Coco still needs training in the basics of being a good dog: housetraining, come-sit-stay commands, etc. Coco is a smart girl, and should be easy to teach for the person willing to invest a little time and effort into the project.
Coco is in a foster home and available for adoption on Saturday.
Foster Report: Coco - what a delicious creature she is. Friendly to the ultimate with dogs and people. Got kids? She adores them. Happy, cheerful, funny and drop dead cute. Coco has had an unsettled few months but this dog has had a great start to life. Coco has the basic idea of house-training but I’m still being very careful to not give her the chance. She been sleeping on my bed and she is generally not crated when I go to work and holds it until I get home at lunchtime to let her out. She hasn’t chewed anything but dog toys (but I don’t leave stuff on floor to tempt her) but no guarantees that she wouldn’t chew on kids toys if she had access to them…….. She’s still very much a puppy and needs more exercise than just a stroll around the block. She’s got lots of energy and loves to run at the dog park. Frisbees are her favorite toy especially if they belong to another dog. She adores Great Danes and pit bulls tho she only weighs 18 pounds herself! Coco would love a dog to wrestle with but will be just fine on her own.
One small issue that’s quite common in young dogs – she gets so excited when you come home that she will sometimes lose control of her bladder. It’s because she’s so thrilled to see you and is unrelated to house-training skills. She’s improved a lot – when you get home don’t make a fuss, just get her out the door ASAP without talking or playing with her. Let her pee before you make a fuss of her!
At home she is undemanding and sweet and loves laps, ball games, and chew toys. She thinks the vacuum cleaner is very exciting! Her basic manners are much improved. Come and meet this joyous little girl, her coat is super-soft, her eyes will fix on her face and you will be in love.

Vera is a sweet and shy, 2 year old Silky Terrier mix. Vera weighs about 16 pounds and has short legs. She has a unique tan coat with hints of silver and white.
Vera, along Pop Tart , was part of a breeder bust in West Virginia a few months ago. She was one of 1100 breeder dogs that was kept in small cages and had little contact with humans, except to clean her cage and deliver food and water. Like many of the dogs that have made their way to APR, Vera was busy nursing a litter of puppies and could not be adopted until she had raised her pups. Now that her pups are weaned and in new homes, Vera is ready to find a home of her own, where she can be the center of attention!
Unfortunately due to Vera's upbringing, she is very shy and fearful in new situations. She has not done anything except raise puppies her entire life and has had very little human contact. She will need an experienced and patient home to help her build self confidence and trust. Due to her timid nature, she would not do well with children. Vera loves other dogs, and wants, in the worst way, to be like them and get attention and affection from humans. She's slowly improving in her fear of us two-legged monsters, but will take a few more months before she appreciates a gentle pat or wants to be held in your lap.
Vera now knows how to use a doggie door, and will go outside for her potty breaks.
Vera is in a foster home and available
for adoption by appointment or on Saturday.
Foster Update: Vera is making slow progress toward liking humans. She comes into the house reluctantly, and wants to approach and sniff us, but when we reach out to meet her halfway, she darts away. Vera is making progress, however. She loves other dogs, and is fun to watch as she interacts with them. You can tell she wants to be part of the "family" including us humans, but is still too much afraid to break out of her old pattern. We will succeed, in time.

Nube is a handsome 5 year old, 22 pound Pug that was surrendered to us by his previous owners because they were no longer able to care for him. Unfortunately, this sweet boy hadheartworms, a very harmful and deadly parasite.
Despite having heartworms, Nube is very affectionate and loving, and seems to get along well with other dogs. He also does well with children so he would make a great family pet.
Nube was treated for heartworms on March 3rd and 4th, and has not had any difficulties from the treatment. If you would like to help with the cost of Nube's heartworm treatment, just click the "sponsor me" link shown below. Any donations will be greatly appreciated.
Nube is in a foster home and
available on Saturday.
Foster report, May 1st: Wow! Nube is an absolutely fantastic Pug! He has a long list of great qualities:He's a very handsome boy with perfect wrinkles on his forehead and the softest plush coat, with minimal shedding. He enjoys being outdoors and has a beautiful gait when he trots around the yard or is going for a walk. Nube has a very solid build that makes him perfect for a real bear hug! He is a very sweet soul who loves attention and dotes on his people. He enjoys a toy but loves his bone and is thrilled if you will get on the floor to play with him. He rarely barks, only when it's mealtime and you aren't serving fast enough. His bark is very soft and I love it along with every other snort and snuffle he makes! Surprisingly, he doesn't snore when he sleeps. More than anything, Nube loves to be with his people. He is content to sleep right up against you while on the sofa but really is a lap dog at heart. He will run up and plop on your lap to rest and actually loves to be held, falling asleep in your arms like a baby.
Nube has been with me for six weeks and is now completely healthy and ready for his new forever home. His recovery has allowed me the time to work with him and to get to know him very well. He is now crate-trained and housebroken, with a strictly consistent schedule. He sleeps peacefully throughout the night. His new home will need to continue training, always with understanding and positive reinforcement. Nube is happy, loving, outgoing, active, energetic, and strong, with a bit of a stubborn streak sometimes, although always obedient. He can be an expert door-darter and would not be the best choice for young children or seniors.
Nube is a great dog and a true loving, lifetime companion that I would adopt myself if I didn't already have a full house. ~

Pop Tart is a 1 year old, 19 pound Bichon Frise. Pop Tart, along with several other doggies here at APR, came to us from West Virginia where she was part of a puppy mill that was shut down by animal control.
Like many of the dogs from the bust, Pop Tart has not had much contact with humans and is understandably shy around two-legged creatures. She will need help learning to trust humans and gain self-confidence. We have no doubt that she will soon learn how wonderful it is to be a companion pet, but for now she is still scared and unsure of herself and will need a quiet and stable home to help her blossom into a confident doggy. Due to her timid nature, she would do best in a home without small children.
Pop Tart is in a foster home and available for adoption by appointment.
Her report: Slowly, slowly but surely, Pop Tart is adapting to life in a home. She is most comfortable with dogs and really blossoms when she has another dog to play with. Pop Tart is now occasionally willing to come into the TV room and hang out with the rest of my crew and she will come close to me but the minute I even move a hand toward her she moves away. Pop Tart clearly wants to be petted, and she has allowed me to pet her without running away. She is a sweet dog who has not displayed any aggression toward me despite her fears.

Beau is a 4 year old 15 pound shiny black Dachshund. He is looking for a quiet home without children or cats.
Beau is a little shy, but gets along fine with the other dogs here at APR. He's also housebroken and crate-trained.
Beau is available for adoption
Tuesday through Saturday.
Beau's foster report: Mr. Beau has fit right in at our house and already considers himself part of the pack. He is a very sweet and happy boy. Beau is a real snuggle-muffin and enjoys his fair share of affection – especially tummy rubs! He cuddles and plays with our Doxie, but is smart enough to mind his “Ps and Qs” with his bigger foster brother. Beau is crate-trained and generally housetrained. In a few short days, he developed a good potty routine, which is working well with the use of a crate when we are away; timely, structured walks; and regular meal times. When he gets excited, he can “leak” a little – but that issue is easily dealt with. He is leash trained and loves to go outside. I would not trust him off leash – as Doxies tend to go into hunting mode when they catch a scent. Beau has chewed nothing inappropriate. He loves curling up in our laps or on a soft piece of furniture. He adapts to any situation easily and would be happy in a home with or without another canine companion. More than anything, Beau just wants to find a family and home to call his own. ~Ann

Erin is a cute little Rat Terrier/Chihuahua mix. She is about 6 months old and currently weighs about 12 pounds. She'll probably reach about 17 pounds when full grown.
Erin came to Atlanta Pet Rescue from an outlying animal control facility. She was very frightened living in her stainless steel cage, and was considered "unadoptable" because of that. Once out of the cage, however, Erin danced a little jig and did her puppy bows and showed us that she had lots of spunk and a sweet temperament.
Erin will love to go jogging or walking with you and when you're sitting on the sofa in the evening, there's no place she'd rather be than by your side.
Erin is available for adoption
Tuesday through Saturday.
New Foster report:
Erin, A/k/a Annabelle, is a ball of fire and just the sweetest little girl. She is now totally house-trained, with use of the doggie door. She enjoys a good cuddle and then dashes off to play. She will entertain herself with all kinds of toys, and has learned where the toy basket is and will locate the perfect one for the moment. She loves to play with a small ball, rolling it around and chasing it. She also enjoys a good chew on a nylabone or other type of chew bone. She is very smart and learns quickly. She has become very loving, and totally enjoys being petted and snuggling. She gets along great with my two dogs (who are of the large and medium sizes) and the resident kitty. I think she would do well with older, active children as she loves to play. She is a precious girl, and as she grows up will become a wonderful companion for anyone.

Hershel is a 1 year old, 16 pound Chinese Crested dog. He and his friends came to Atlanta Pet Rescue from a breeder who was downsizing.
Chinese crested dogs are merry, loving and friendly. Hershel is a "Powder Puff" Chinese Crested and will need regular grooming to keep his coat in great shape. He has been shaved down, but it will grow in and he will look much like a Poodle. Hershel would be happy to go for walks, play with toys or simply curl up for a good snooze.
Hershel is available for adoption
Tuesday through Saturday.
Foster Update: Hershel is a lovely guy. As he has relaxed at home so he has come to life and is really coming out of his shell and is definitely a smart dog. He loves human attention, adores playing with my other dogs and warms up to people much faster now.
He’s had a rotten life so far and is definitely trying to make up for lost time. Hershel is very playful, loves to retrieve balls and ropes, chew sticks in the park, races with the terrier. He’s gone to the dog park each day and gets to run with the big dogs – he can fly! If he loses his confidence he goes straight up to the closest person and sits down at their feet! He also crates well. His coat is coming in very thick and curly and as it grows long he’s less cream and more tan and is downright pretty, new photo coming. He doesn’t shed at all.
Hershel will do best in a quiet, laid back adult only home. That said, my house has got a lot livelier since he arrived. He’ll do especially well with another small dog who loves to play. He loves to be close to you but still lacks a bit of confidence if he’s not sure of your intentions. When he’s not sure what is happening he’ll do the classic Hershel “sit and watch” – he’s doing it in the photo! His trademark cute look.

Barnaby is a 1 year old, 18 pound Pekingese or Brussels Griffon mix. This handsome fellow made a long trip from an outlying animal control facility along with his friends Ian and Foxy, who were recently adopted.
Barnaby has shown himself to be a very outgoing and friendly guy. He simply needs a home that will give him the love and stability he deserves and never let him end up in doggie jail again. Judging from the sun-bleached hair he sports, Barnaby has lived his life outdoors up until now, but he was quick to convert to being a companion animal and live indoors with his family.
Barnaby is available for adoption
Tuesday through Saturday.
Foster Report: Barnaby makes me smile! He usually has a toy or ball in his mouth, asking me to play. When he is not playing wildly with Skeeter, he quietly goes about his business checking out the great outdoors. Barnaby is housetrained, crate trained, and the perfect gentleman with
my other dogs. My Lab, Molly is lying quietly at my feet with Barnaby draped over her side, chewing on an old bone. Molly doesn't usually
like the foster dogs too well so he must be OK in her eyes. At the shelter, he had some food bowl issues but here, away from that turmoil, he shares everything with five other dogs and initiates play with them.
Barnaby loves to jump on my lap and as I scratch his neck, his head
falls back with his eyes closed as he relaxes into a puddle of
contentment. He really is a joy to have around.

Benson is a 1 year old, 16 pound Brussels Griffon mix. Benson looks very much like Barnaby, shown above. Benson was surrendered by his former owner and found his way to Atlanta Pet Rescue. He is a cutie, with big brown eyes and long legs.
Benson is looking for a home to call his own. So far, Benson has been a perfect gentleman. He will admit that he does not much like the bath but otherwise he is a good dog.
Benson is in a foster home and available for adoption on Saturday.
Foster Report: Benson has been a great addition to our house this last week. He's still very much a puppy, and has enjoyed roughhousing with my same-sized dog every day and night. Benson has a very sweet disposition, but just doesn't know his proper manners. He is working on becoming fully housetrained, and loves taking care of his business on his twice daily walks. He spent an evening with a 1yr old child and seemed at ease, but I also think he would love having an older child who could help him use up all that puppy energy. We've crated him during the day when we're at work, and tends to 'talk' a bit in there. That quality also helps him be a great watchdog...he definitely hears people on the street and alerts you to their presence. Overall, I really enjoy having Benson around...he's sweet, playful and so happy to run around our yard. He just needs a steady influence to help him become a model doggy citizen.

Shirley is a 7 year old Schnauzer who weighs 19 pounds and has the same unusual beautiful brown coloring as Laverne, above. Shirley was turned in along with Laverne, above, by their former owner who said he couldn't keep them any longer.
Shirley has a coat that is in poor condition due to bad nutrition and less than desirable living conditions. She also has crinkled-up ears that are the result of chronic ear infections throughout her life. She doesn't have ear infections any more, but her ears tell a tale of suffering. Shirley is a shy dog who is looking for a stable forever home that will make sure she never ends up in doggie jail again.

Ella is an 8 month old, 22 pound mixed breed pup. Our guess is that she could be an Italian Greyhound mix with her long svelt legs!
Ella was surrendered by her previous owners who felt like she was just more than they could handle. Ella is a very active girl and is not much interested in a sedentary lifestyle. Ella would make a great jogging partner or maybe even an agility or frisbee dog. She is very eager to please and definitely needs an active family who is able to keep up the pace. Ella would prefer a home without feline companions.

Jules is a spunky, 1 year old female Westie mix. Jules traveled with several companions to Atlanta Pet Rescue from a rural animal control facility. Unfortunately, many dogs in rural areas find them self homeless and often end up in doggie jail. Jules is happy to be free from her prison sentence and eagerly awaits a new forever family.
Jules is very cuddle-able and loves to sit in your lap. She gets along well with the other doggies at APR and has made herself at home. Now, all she needs is to meet a wonderful adoptive family who will take her away and care for her forever.

Foster Report 5/12/08: Jules is getting along very well in her new foster home. She loves to nap in her doggie beds, is well behaved in the house, and is completely house broken.
Jules is a great little companion. She gets
along with my dog and loves to be around people. Jules is great to sleep
with. She is very still and doesn't wake one up in the morning for food.
Jules loves to curl up on the couch to watch TV. If there isn't a couch
around, she can be found in a doggie bed. She loves doggie beds. She also
likes small, soft toys. Jules is a champion at riding in the car. She also
likes to race like speed racer around the yard now and again. Jules is on a
