Shelby is a 1 year old, 18 pound Sheltie mix. Shelby came to Atlanta Pet Rescue from an outlying animal control facility where she had been picked up by animal control after she and several other dogs were abandoned in a vacant house with no food or water. Most of the dogs were euthanized because they were completely terrified of humans. However, Shelby was spared because she showed promise of being sweet and affectionate towards humans.
Shelby has been afraid of most everything, and will need an experienced and very patient owner to help her learn about the world. Shelby will accept attention and affection, and even moves towards you when you stop petting her. We think she is young enough to turnaround and become a great family pet. She has very pretty markings and soft fur. Shelby is in a foster home learning how to enjoy the comforts of a nice, warm home and human companionship.
Shelby is available for adoption by appointment only.
Shelby is sponsored by:

Foster report 4/6/09: Shelby does not yet understand playing with other dogs or toys but she will most likely get there in two to three weeks. She still flinches at at loud noises and we still are working on house training, leash walking, and trying to learn to eat out of a dog dish. So far she will eat her food only if I put it directly on the floor. Shelby loves affection and is beginning to come when I call her. She is losing some of the ready-to-flee-at-any-moment stances though she does have her "safe places" that she goes to when she is unsure. Shelby will need a person who is patient and willing to wait for the big payoff of having her complete devotion.
Foster update 6/5/09: Shelby is making great strides in learning the joys of being a dog and having a home. She now plays with toys- although toys that squeak scare her-with my dogs and with me. She loves to snuggle and play in the morning and she consistently wakes up around 6am. She is making progress with the housebreaking but she needs to be taken out on a consistent schedule to not have accidents. She has learned to sit and is food and praise motivated. She has a long way to go with respect to walking on a leash. She will walk on a leash in the backyard for about 5 minutes. Outside the gate and on the sidewalk is another matter. It just seems like all the sensory information overwhelms her and after about 5 minutes freezes. So, this is something that will take a patient person to help her overcome her fears. Shelby is scared of unfamiliar noises. While quite affectionate, she has to be approached slowly. She is a wonderful companion and totally adorable-especially when she goes into a play bow or "talks" (not barks) to get your attention.
Update 10/29/09: Shelby has been attending a special training class for fearful dogs. A huge thanks goes out to Myra for her willingness to go the extra mile in helping Shelby become the best dog she can be.
Foster Update 2/3/10: I adore Shelby and could not be prouder of the progress she has made since first coming to my home. She has grown to be a highly affectionate, playful companion. Over time she has gotten more accustomed to changes in her environment so that they do not elicit barking. She will occasionally bark at new things and can be nervous about various objects and situations but all in all she has made great strides. She also will calm down fairly quickly when her name is said in a reasonable tone or if provided with a distraction. Shelby is consistently eating from a bowl and today even approached another dog's bowl, which is a first for her.
Shelby still does not like going on walks and we have tried different times of day. I took her to the mountains where it is much quieter and she did much better. At this time even though would prefer not to go on walks (and runs away when I get the leash out), she will run like the wind in the backyard and at doggie daycare. If you saw her in either environment you would never know she had any fear issues. She loves to chew on bones, toys and will chew on any plastic she can get. When I come home from work, she frequently will run to the back room and wait for me to follow her there. She will then drop into a play bow, race around the room and then drop to get a tummy rub. Shelby is quite smart and using shaping to train her is quite effective. Shelby needs an experienced dog person who is patient and willing to figure out what works best for Shelby and to praise her when she works though a fear. She would also do best if her person had a well-balanced dog to be Shelby's companion. She will also need a fenced yard. Shelby is housebroken but will not go when she is on a leash. This girl has a world of love and devotion to give the right person and she provides endless entertainment with some of her playful antics.

Jolene is a spunky 2 year old Jack Russell Terrier mix who weighs 17 pounds. She has a low build and looks as if she could have some Corgi in her. Jolene came to us from an outlying animal control facility where she was picked up as a stray.
Jolene is a friendly girl and loves everyone she meets. She gets along well with the other dogs here at APR. Jolene does have some separation anxiety and will need to live in a single family home, as opposed to an apartment, condo, or townhouse. She is also a high energy girl who will need a family to keep her busy. Jolene has been doing well with house training, however, so she is a smart girl. Submit your application today to see if Jolene could be the one for you.
Jolene is available for adoption
Tuesday through Saturday.

Note from a friend: Jolene is a ball of energy rolled up in the most adorable package. She loves playing with her doggie friends here at the shelter and, of course, her people friends. I took her for a walk today and she loved running around and playing. She's a great dog who is looking for a family that can keep her busy and exercised. She's also a very smart girl who would excel at obedience training and even some agility training. Jo-Jo would love a fenced-in yard and a playful pooch to run around with! Come meet her today!
Note from Jolene: Who is the party girl at APR? Everyone says it is ME! Sure, I love to play all day long with all my friends (big and small…I play with them all). However, there is a serious side of me and the trainer and I have been working on it all week. The trainer says that I am a super smart girl. My “sit”, “watch”, “touch”, and “leave it” would rival all those champions of obedience trials. My challenge this week has been “stay”. I just love to be right by your side, but I am slowly but surely understanding the meaning of “stay”. I am great on leash and I really do love my walks. There is a time to play and a time to work..and I am learning both and loving it!

Update 2/18/10: Cliff has very dark urine, and tests done so far have ruled out a urinary tract infection. He will go back to the vet for blood work to determine if he has a kidney or liver problem that is causing his urine to be so dark. Other than that, Cliff is a happy, playful fellow, who does not have a care in the world.
Update 2/22/10: Cliff had blood work done at Collier Animal Hospital and his enzyme levels were a little high. The next step is to go for a liver ultrasound to try and determine the exact cause. He is scheduled to have the ultrasound done tomorrow at Georgia Veterinary Specialists. Please check back for more updates once we receive the results.
Update 2/24/10: Cliff went to Georgia Veterinary Specialists for an ultrasound exam of his liver, and the results were that there are no obvious abnormalities. In the meantime, his urine is a normal color, and Dr. Ewing is treating Cliff for Hepatitis, as a precaution only. We hope she will release him for adoption soon. Cliff is happy, playful and does not show any signs of illness or discomfort of any type.

Taylor is a very cute 6 month old Rat Terrier mix who weighs 19 pounds. This little sprite was surrendered by her former owner because she has been diagnosed with Demodex Mange, a non-contagious and easily treatable form of mange. We will make sure Taylor starts the treatment she needs so she can get on the road to recovery.
Taylor has not had much training in her life to teach her how to be a properly behaved pooch. She will need a patient and understanding owner who can teach her simple rules, such as not jumping up on people and not being mouthy. Having a structured environment will definitely help her become a happier and more well-rounded doggie, and also help keep her demodex mange flare-ups at bay. Taylor will make a wonderful canine companion for the right home.
If you can help defray the cost of Taylor's medical treatment please click on the "Sponsor Me" link below. Any donations are greatly appreciated to help get this girl healthy again.
Taylor is available for adoption
Tuesday through Saturday.
Note from Taylor: Hi Everyone! Wow, this has been a very busy week for me. I have been working with a trainer and I am learning a lot. I can “sit” and “watch” like a pro. I am really good with my leash walking and I am progressing with my sit/stays. The hardest thing for me to learn this week is “down” and “leave it”, but my trainer knows I will learn these new behaviors in no time because… I LOVE TO LEARN AND PLEASE PEOPLE! Remember, I am still a young puppy and I need and want guidance and lots of patience. But I am so eager to learn and to become a part of a patient and loving family.

Waffles is a two year old Westie mix who weighs 19 pounds. This pretty girl came to us from an outlying animal control facility where her time was up.
Waffles is a playful gal who is looking for a forever home to call her own. She should make a wonderful canine companion for most any home. Waffles likes to play with her dog mates at APR, especially Pace, who looks a lot like her.
Waffles is in a foster home and available for adoption on Saturday.
Foster Update: Waffles is as sweet as her name suggests – she’s generous with her doggy kisses, and is a very playful and feisty girl. She might be a little shy at first, but once she warms up, she’ll be a great addition to your home. Waffles likes to play fetch, chew on rope toys, play with other dogs and take naps on her bed.
Waffles is very food motivated, which will make her training much easier. She’s done great with potty training, but she will need a forever home that’s committed to help make her crate a happy and safe place for her to be.

Claribel is a beautiful one year old Spaniel Corgi mix who weighs 23 pounds. This sweet girl came to us from an outlying animal control facility where her chances of being adopted were very slim.
Claribel acts as if she has never seen love in her lifetime. She wants to trust, but is slow to warm up. She has preferred to keep to herself so far; however, we are sure that with a little time and TLC, Claribel will begin to show us her true colors. While she does not have an aggressive bone in her body, she will still need a patient and understanding owner to help her come out of her shell.
This sweet girl is sure to make a wonderful lifetime companion to someone who can open their home and give her the love and stability she desperately needs.
Claribel is available for adoption by appointment or on Saturday.

After many attempts to find her owner, Winnie was surrendered to Atlanta Pet Rescue where she can find her perfect forever home.
Winnie is a sweet and well behaved girl. She will need a stable forever home who can devote the time needed to help her become a well-rounded and happy adult doggie. Winnie promises to return the favor with lots of love and puppy kisses.

Newman contacted us to come stay at our facility until he can find a forever home. He is the most affectionate dog you will ever meet. This darling fella was so very patient while our staff trimmed his nails, cleaned his ears, and bathed him. Newman is waiting for you to submit your application and provide him with the forever home he deserves.

Lilah is a darling three year old Cocker Spaniel mix who weighs 29 pounds. Miss Lilah is a little bit on the heavy side (although she prefers not to talk about it), so she could stand to lose several pounds to be at a healthier weight. Lilah was surrendered by her former owner because they were no longer able to care for her.
Lilah has striking good looks with soft beautiful fluffy fur. She is a little shy around new people, but warms up once she knows you are her friend. Lilah would do best in a home that could help her obtain her Jenny Craig goals. She would also do best in a quiet home without small children. Lilah has become one sweet pup since she arrived here and we are sure that she will make someone a wonderful lifetime companion.
Lilah is available for adoption
Tuesday through Saturday.
