Shelby is a 1 year old, 18 pound Sheltie mix. Shelby came to Atlanta Pet Rescue from an outlying animal control facility where she had been picked up by animal control after she and several other dogs were abandoned in a vacant house with no food or water. Most of the dogs were euthanized because they were completely terrified of humans. However, Shelby was spared because she showed promise of being sweet and affectionate towards humans.
Shelby has been afraid of most everything, and will need an experienced and very patient owner to help her learn about the world. Shelby will accept attention and affection, and even moves towards you when you stop petting her. We think she is young enough to turnaround and become a great family pet. She has very pretty markings and soft fur. Shelby is in a foster home learning how to enjoy the comforts of a nice, warm home and human companionship.
Shelby is available for adoption by appointment only.

Foster report 4/6/09: Shelby does not yet understand playing with other dogs or toys but she will most likely get there in two to three weeks. She still flinches at at loud noises and we still are working on house training, leash walking, and trying to learn to eat out of a dog dish. So far she will eat her food only if I put it directly on the floor. Shelby loves affection and is beginning to come when I call her. She is losing some of the ready-to-flee-at-any-moment stances though she does have her "safe places" that she goes to when she is unsure. Shelby will need a person who is patient and willing to wait for the big payoff of having her complete devotion.
Foster update 6/5/09: Shelby is making great strides in learning the joys of being a dog and having a home. She now plays with toys- although toys that squeak scare her-with my dogs and with me. She loves to snuggle and play in the morning and she consistently wakes up around 6am. She is making progress with the housebreaking but she needs to be taken out on a consistent schedule to not have accidents. She has learned to sit and is food and praise motivated. She has a long way to go with respect to walking on a leash. She will walk on a leash in the backyard for about 5 minutes. Outside the gate and on the sidewalk is another matter. It just seems like all the sensory information overwhelms her and after about 5 minutes freezes. So, this is something that will take a patient person to help her overcome her fears. Shelby is scared of unfamiliar noises. While quite affectionate, she has to be approached slowly. She is a wonderful companion and totally adorable-especially when she goes into a play bow or "talks" (not barks) to get your attention.
Update 10/29/09: Shelby has been attending a special training class for fearful dogs. A huge thanks goes out to Myra for her willingness to go the extra mile in helping Shelby become the best dog she can be.
Foster Update 2/3/10: I adore Shelby and could not be prouder of the progress she has made since first coming to my home. She has grown to be a highly affectionate, playful companion. Over time she has gotten more accustomed to changes in her environment so that they do not elicit barking. She will occasionally bark at new things and can be nervous about various objects and situations but all in all she has made great strides. She also will calm down fairly quickly when her name is said in a reasonable tone or if provided with a distraction. Shelby is consistently eating from a bowl and today even approached another dog's bowl, which is a first for her.
Shelby still does not like going on walks and we have tried different times of day. I took her to the mountains where it is much quieter and she did much better. At this time even though would prefer not to go on walks (and runs away when I get the leash out), she will run like the wind in the backyard and at doggie daycare. If you saw her in either environment you would never know she had any fear issues. She loves to chew on bones, toys and will chew on any plastic she can get. When I come home from work, she frequently will run to the back room and wait for me to follow her there. She will then drop into a play bow, race around the room and then drop to get a tummy rub. Shelby is quite smart and using shaping to train her is quite effective. Shelby needs an experienced dog person who is patient and willing to figure out what works best for Shelby and to praise her when she works though a fear. She would also do best if her person had a well-balanced dog to be Shelby's companion. She will also need a fenced yard. Shelby is housebroken but will not go when she is on a leash. This girl has a world of love and devotion to give the right person and she provides endless entertainment with some of her playful antics.

Jin is a 2 year old Pekingese who weighs 18 pounds. This handsome boy came to us from an outlying animal control facility where he was surrendered by his former owner because they were no longer able to care for him.
Jin is a good natured dog who is reportedly housetrained and good with children. We are sure he will make a great canine companion for the right home.
Jin is in a foster home and available
for adoption on Saturday.
Foster Report 1/1/09: Jin-Jin is doing just fine. He's not only very handsome, he almost has a regal look about him. He's very quiet but will "talk' to you when he wants your attention. He looks like a big teddy bear and seems to have somewhat of an old soul, but this boy loves to play and play some more! He's been wrestling at every opportunity with his foster sister, Sissy. He is fine on a leash but really enjoys exploring the yard and napping in the sun right now.
Jin-Jin will need daily grooming to maintain his coat and he would love to have a fenced yard and a like-minded playmate in his forever
home. Jin-Jin is fabulous! ~Claire
Foster Report 2/3/09: This teddy bear just gets better every day. He's eating well and has taken to being groomed daily. Jin-Jin loves walks and rides in the car, but these days, he loves wrestling with my Brittany more than anything. He wants to play non-stop all day and their matches can get pretty rowdy. He will also run at top speed just for the joy of it. Jin-Jin is not a couch potato and if there is no one to play with at the moment, he is pretty good about entertaining himself for a while with a toy or a bone. Jin-Jin is quiet, highly active, happy, and has a determined mischievous streak at times that needs to be supervised or he may use a table leg as his next chew toy. He will need a like-minded doggie friend to keep up with him and to keep him occupied. But at the end of the day when he is worn out, or first thing in the morning when he isn't quite awake, Jin-Jin becomes the most darling, fuzzy, teddy bear who thrives on having his tummy rubbed and he becomes the best snuggle buddy in the world. I just adore him!

Ralph is a handsome three year old Bichon who weighs 17 pounds and came to us from an outlying animal control facility where he was turned in as a stray. Ralph has a very sweet demeanor.
Ralph had too many Christmas cookies and is making a New Year's resolution to lose some weight. He needs to lose a pound or three to be at a healthy weight. He is a friendly guy who would be a wonderful canine companion for most any home.
Ralph has a cough and is not
currently available for adoption.
Update 1/20/10: My cold is getting much better, but I still cough quite a bit. I like my playmates and have lots of fun every day, but darn, I just can't shake this cough. I feel fine otherwise, and really can't wait till I get a home of my own.

Dusty is a charming five year old Miniature Pinscher who weighs 15 pounds. His coloring is the more unusual "blue" gray and tan instead of black and tan. This handsome boy was surrendered by citizens who found Dusty several months ago, and at first intended to keep Dusty. When they realized they had more dogs than they could care for, they decided to find a Rescue Group to take him in.
Unfortunately, poor Dusty did not receive monthly heartworm prevention, and as a result he is now Heartworm Positive. We have had him treated, and he is well on his way to recovery and a happy life.
Through it all, Dusty is still a positive and happy little guy. We are sure he will make a fabulous lifetime companion for most any home. If you can help defray the cost of Dusty's medical expenses, please click on the "Sponsor Me" link below.
Dusty is in a foster home and available for adoption on Saturday.

Luke is a two year old Shih Tzu/Westie mix (or something similar) who weighs 23 pounds. This sweet boy came to us from a rural animal control facility where his time was up.
Luke is a very friendly and outgoing guy. He definitely has cute looks to match his fabulous personality. Luke will make a wonderful lifetime companion for most any home.
Luke is in a foster home and

Thank you!
Foster Update: Luke is probably one of my favorite dogs I had the pleasure to foster! Luke has a very happy, charming and outgoing personality; he gets along great with people, children and dogs we meet on our walks. Needless to say that he is absolutely housebroken, never attempted to destruct anything and he has a free pass to roam the house. Luke is never far away from my feet and he loves to watch me doing chores; he enjoys sitting on the couch and watching TV with the children as well. Luke’s two favorite things are long walks and tummy rubs; he might be a really good running companion! Luke loves to play with our neighbor’s dogs and their favorite game is racing up and down the fence, the more the merrier. Luke comes when called and patiently waits in front of the closet where we hide the treats, he is pretty smart. Luke is going to be an awesome family dog, he is everything you can wish for and more.

Angel is a 3 year old, 16 pound Cocker/Doxie mix that came to us from a rural outlying animal control facility were she was surrendered by her previous owner because they were in the military and were being deployed overseas.
Angel is a friendly and fun-loving girl. She has a great temperament and gets along great with other dogs. Her amazing personality would make her a great match for almost any family.
Angel is available for adoption
Tuesday through Saturday.
Foster Report 1/29/10: Angel, who recently spent a few days with me, is a little angel with a beautiful coat who loves to go on walks and play with stuffed toys. Angel is well-behaved and got along just fine with my pack and ignored the one who was a tad obnoxious about Angel's right to join us in the TV room. Nevertheless, the first couple of days although Angel did not overtly seek affection, she spent time with me in the TV room and liked sleeping on the bed. She was a tad standoffish and it seemed like she was evaluating the lay of the land before she was going to show any emotion. She had warmed up considerably by the third day. She was excited to see me when I got home, she got excited about taking walks and she loved being petted. On the whole a laid back, sweet, affectionate, watchful dog. She would "attack" stuffed toys by grabbing one in her mouth, shaking it around, and make growling noises. Come meet this little girl and go home with your canine lifetime companion.

Jolene is a spunky 2 year old Jack Russell Terrier mix who weighs 17 pounds. She has a low build and looks as if she could have some Corgi in her. Jolene came to us from an outlying animal control facility where she was picked up as a stray.
Jolene is a friendly girl and loves everyone she meets. She gets along well with the other dogs here at APR. Jolene does have some separation anxiety and will need to live in a single family home, as opposed to an apartment, condo, or townhouse. Note from a friend: Jolene is a ball of energy rolled up in the most adorable package. She loves playing with her doggie friends here at the shelter and, of course, her people friends. I took her for a walk today and she loved running around and playing. She's a great dog who is looking for a family that can keep her busy and exercised. She's also a very smart girl who would excel at obedience training and even some agility training. Jo-Jo would love a fenced-in yard and a playful pooch to run around with! Come meet her today! |

Apple is a one year old Schnauzer/Cairn Terrier mix who weighs 28 pounds. This sweet girl came to us from an outlying animal control where she was picked up as a stray along with her sister Tallulah (shown above). Except for coloring, they both look much alike.
Apple may be a little reserved when meeting new people, but will warm up once she knows she can trust you. Apple loves to play with her canine pals here, and will run through the yard wit a rope toy in her mouth, inviting all to join in. She enjoys a good-natured tug of war with anyone who grabs on.
Even though she is 28 pounds, we have placed her on the small dog page because she is small in stature. She is just built solidly. We are sure Apple will be a wonderful canine companion for most any home.
