Macy is an energetic one year old Fox Terrier-Basenji mix who weighs 15 pounds. She came to us from an outlying animal control facility that had picked her up as a stray.

From the moment that this sweet girl came through the door she has been nothing but active. She is just beyond ecstatic! Macy has been literally running circles and smiling nonstop. She will love to be a part of an active home with a fenced in yard so that she will have plenty of room to run and play.

Macy is available for adoption

Tuesday through Saturday.

Foster Report 7/16/10: Macy is housebroken! It's been three weeks without an accident. Woo hoo! It’s the little things in life. Also, her separation anxiety is basically gone when I leave the house and I can go off to work for the day and not even crate her. She’s never crated when I’m home and sleeps on my bed. What a lovely change.

Macy adores people, adores other dogs, adores kids and food and walks and squirrels and toys and the car and my bed and the sofa and my lap and investigating. However, she does NOT adore cats. She’s like a happy little fox - bright and alert and curious. And she smiles and smiles, a huge happy grin on her face all of the time. The girl is an optimist! Macy definitely is not for couch potatoes. She really needs to go to a home with a playful dog to wrestle with so she can burn some of her great energy. Plus, you’ll need a fenced in backyard or be willing to take real walks everyday. After the walk she relaxes and is a great sofa dog until mid-evening when it’s time for another wrestling match. I’ve been keeping the neighbor’s greyhound this week and she’s even got his slow-as-molasses self into a game or two, though I think he’s dazed by her dazzling speed.

Macy did have some separation anxiety initially. This is the primary reason I think she absolutely needs a canine companion. It has completely disappeared now that she’s settled at my house with the other dogs. She spends the work day either in the crate or on the sofa with my other dogs. When I come home she appears relaxed rather than stressed and bounces out of the crate just as happy as pie. On the plus side, she has shown little inclination to shred anything in the house other than her toys. She’s a great eater, hardly ever barks, and good on a leash. She knows sit and is learning “wait”. She‘s actually very easy to live with. So that’s Macy - a gorgeous, social, happy girl for anyone with another playful dog. And she’s darn cute to boot!

Ginny is a two and a half year old Puggle mix. Ginny weighs 17 pounds, but she is slightly underweight. She will need to gain a couple of pounds to be at a healthy weight. Ginny came to us from an outlying animal control facility where she was surrendered by her previous owners.

Ginny is a gentle and sweet pooch. She gets along well with other dogs, walks well on a leash, and just loves attention from anyone who is willing to give it. Ginny will make a wonderful lifetime companion for most any home.

If you look closely in the second photo, you can see that Ginny's left rear foot is bandaged.  That's because all five of her toes on that foot are broken!!  (ouch!)

Ginny is not currently available for adoption.

Update 7/6/10: Ginny paid a visit to Dr. Whittle at Paces Ferry Veterinary Clinic today. He told Ginny she will need six weeks of cage rest while her foot heals. Ginny does not act as if she has any problem at all with her injury. She is ready to get out there and run around,  but doctor's orders must be followed. Please check back for more updates on this sweet girl.

Update 7/28/10: Ginny was spayed today! She is still on cage rest, but this is one more step in her journey to find her forever home!

Update 8/11/10:  Ginny's foot has not healed, so she went to an orthopedic specialist today who thinks she needs a different splint that will hold her broken bones in better alignment.   She was sedated, the bones re-aligned and her foot splinted today. Ginny now has another 6 weeks in this splint before we'll know if her bones will heal.  She is on very, very strict cage rest to give her bones the very best chance to heal.  Poor Ginny!  She doesn't understand why she is being confined, but tolerates it without complaint.

Note from a friend:  I had the fortune to be able to spend some time with Ginny this weekend.  She is such a gentle and loving girl.  Because of her injury, she is on very strict cage rest, but she is handling it with grace.  When I took her out of the crate, all she wanted to do is stretch out on my lap to get her belly rubbed.  She alternated between excited wriggles from having someone love on her and just relaxing with a contented sigh.  She is a truly beautiful soul!

Velvet is a five and a half year old Lhasa Apso who weighs 18 pounds. She was surrendered by her previous owner along with her friend, Cleo (recently adopted), because their owner has health problems that prevented the owner from caring for her dogs.

Velvet has some hair loss that is due to a poor diet and flea bites. She is being treated with antibiotics and regular medicated baths.

Velvet is still adjusting to her new surroundings here. She has been spending most of her day laying with her friend, Cleo. Once she warms up, she is known to be very affectionate and good with children. Velvet is also reportedly housebroken. Please submit your application today and see if you can provide Velvet with a wonderful forever home.

Velvet is in a foster home and available for adoption on Saturday.

Foster Update 7/28/10:  I know that I have said this many times before, but I'm going to say it again.  Just imagine being ripped from your home and taken to a strange place with no clue as to why.  Well, this is what has happened to Velvet and Cleo.  Velvet was so traumatized by all of the changes that she didn't want to eat.  I brought her to my house and within an hour, she found the dog door, ate some food (including kibble) and now follows me everywhere.   ~Gigi

Update 8/11/10: Velvet had a major setback today when her surgical incision opened up and her stomach, intestines, etc. spilled out.  She was rushed to the Sandy Springs Emergency Clinic where she went straight into surgery to clean out her abdominal cavity and re-close her surgical incision.  Velvet's incision was larger than normal because she had bladder stones, so an extra-long incisiion was required to allow access to her bladder as well.  Velvet is resting comfortably and will be transferred tomorrow to the care of Paces Ferry Veterinary Clinic.

Update 8/12/10:  Velvet was brought to Paces Ferry Veterinary Clinic at 8 AM this morning.  She was heavily sedated when she arrived and is now restricted to cage rest for the next 7-10 days. While she has had a run of issues to deal with lately, she has shown us that she is a survivor.  To all of you who read this update, please keep her in your thoughts and prayers!  ~Gigi

Update 8/14/10:  Velvet is out of the vet clinic and under strict cage rest at our Vinings shelter. As of today, she is eating chicken and rice and all functions are in total operation.  She has bounced back yet again! Kudos to your spirit, Velvet. It is definitely indomitable!!! ~Gigi

Update 8/19/10: Thought you'd like to know that Velvet is doing great! She's spunky and happy! As soon as she has her stitches out in about a week, she'll be ready for adoption.

The pinkish area between my eyes is bare skin.  I scratched my fur away because of the fleas biting me there.

Look at me now!

Carlson is a handsome nine month old Terrier mix. He may even have some Shih Tzu in him. Carlson currently weighs 20 pounds. He will probably grow a tiny bit still, and gain a couple of pounds as an adult. This sweet boy came to us  from an outlying animal control facility that had picked him up as a stray.

Carlson had some minor hair loss  and skin irritation due to fleas. It doesn't make him stop "smiling" though.  Carlson is always in a good mood and ready for fun. He immediately attracted lots of attention from our staff and volunteers, which he welcomed with an exuberant wag of the tail. He is sure to make a wonderful lifetime companion for most any home.

Note from a friend:  Are you looking for a devoted, intelligent, and handsome young man?  Well, look no more!  Carlson is the one for you.  Carlson prefers to not be closed up in a crate, but as we’ve worked with him on that, he has demonstrated that he is extremely smart!  Carlson is taking to his training like he was born to be an obedience champion!  This food motivated little boy learned “watch”, “sit”, and “touch” in one session and is rapidly mastering “go crate” and “wait”.  Carlson is a top-notch dog just waiting for a top-notch family.

Carlson is in a foster home and available

for adoption by appointment and on Saturday.

Note my wagging tail--a sign that I am

a happy boy!

Casey is a scrawny and shy three year old Terrier mix.  He came to us from a local animal control facility where he was living in a pen with four other male dogs.  From the looks of it, poor Casey didn't get his share of the dog food because he is a little more than skin and bones.  Casey weighs only 12 pounds, but he should weigh 16-18 pounds when he reaches a healthy weight.

Casey is a sweet-natured pup, and gets along well with other dogs at our rehab center.  He arrived with Kennel Cough, so he wouldn't eat at first.  A little TLC, some cooked chicken and rice, and now Casey is feeling better and beginning to eat dog food.

Update 8/02/10:  Casey has recovered from his Kennel Cough and is eating well now, so he will be making a trip to the vet this week for his neuter surgery, and then he'll be ready for his forever home.

Casey is in a foster home and available

for adoption on Saturday.

Foster Report 8/20/10: There's never a dull moment in the house when Casey is here! He's quickly learning the ways of being a polite dog, and once he has gotten his exercise for the day, he's content to curl up next to you for a nap. He LOVES to play with toys, especially ones that squeak.

Like many terriers, he can be a little stubborn, but is very food-motivated which helps with training. Casey loves to go on walks and is making great improvements with house training. Most of all, he wants a family to call his own!

Lacy is a precious four year old Cocker Spaniel who weighs 32 pounds. We have placed her on the small dog page because she needs to lose at least 5 pounds to be at a healthy weight. Lacy was surrendered by her former owner because they felt she was not compatible with the new baby in the house.

Lacy is a sweet girl, but is understandably a little overwhelmed by her new situation. She has done well with the other dogs and is slowly beginning to accept that the staff and volunteers here are friendly too. All Lacy needs to complete her journey is a loving forever home to call her own.

Lacy is in a foster home and

Watson is a wonderful canine that is friendly with everyone he meets. When he meets someone who wants to pet him, he gets so happy that he will spin in circles and then jump up to be petted. He's great at playing fetch, too. Watson is a spunky boy who is sure to be a loving lifetime companion.

Buster is a five month old Corgi mix who currently weighs 10 pounds. He will be approximately 20-25 pounds as an adult. Buster came to us from an outlying animal control facility that had picked him up as a stray along with his siblings, Betty and Brutus.

Buster looks a lot like his brother. There are minor differences though. He has a fine strip of white that goes between his eyes and up his forehead. Buster is also the smallest of the three.

Buster is a sweetheart, but was a bit shy at first with our staff and volunteers. He has come out of his shell and is a lovable playful pup.  Please submit your application today and see if you can provide Buster with the forever home he deserves.

Becky is a spunky one year old Spaniel mix who weighs 20 pounds. She came to us from an outlying animal control facility that had picked her up as a stray.

She has a little bit of hair loss on her hind legs due to flea bite dermatitis. All she needed was a soothing bath to help relieve her skin and a flea preventitive to continue keeping her body flea free. Once Becky's coat grows out she will be a beautiful girl again.

She is friendly with everyone she meets, dogs and humans alike. Becky has been romping around since she came through the door. Becky just loves playing. Becky would be a great dog for an active family with a fenced in yard.

Becky is feeling under the weather and not currently available for adoption.

Princess is a darling two year old Dachshund mix who weighs 17 pounds. She came to us from an outlying animal control facility where she was turned in by her former owners because they had too many dogs.

Princess is very sweet. She has been mostly keeping to herself since she arrived, but will surely become comfortable and show us her true colors in no time. Princess does seem to be a princess. She would love to go to a home where she can be pampered and loved forever.

Princess is in a foster home and available for adoption on Saturday.

Foster Report 9/1/10: Princess seems to love walks and can walk for up to 3 miles before wanting to stop. She doesn't really seem to have any interest in playing catch or chase. She seems to enjoy relaxing at your feet and being rubbed constantly. She whines a lot when being left alone though. She enjoys relaxing in her doggy bed versus getting in her crate. She does sleep in her crate at night, but she makes it clear that she would rather be in her doggy bed. Although she is really good with people, she does put her front paws up on them as soon as someone approaches. When going on walks, she is constantly changing sides, but she is a great companion and can easily keep up. She doesn't eat a lot of food or drink a lot of water. I think she is perfect for a family that would want a dog that enjoys resting at their feet and being rubbed on periodically. She would also be great for a family that goes for walks.

Bella is a six month old Beagle who weighs 20 pounds. She was surrendered to us by her previous owner because they could no longer care for her.

Bella is a typical Beagle; she follows her nose. If she even smells a treat she will immediately get into sitting position, ready to receive her prize. Bella is very friendly. She enjoys playing with other dogs, playing fetch, and also loves attention from her person. She is reportedly good with children and cats. Bella would be a great lifetime companion for a loving family.

Wesley is a handsome two year old Sheltie mix who currently weighs 18 pounds. He is just a bit underweight and will need to gain a few pounds to be at a healthy weight. Wesley came to us from an outlying animal control facility.

Wesley is extremely sweet. He enjoys going for walks and receiving affection. Wesley was overjoyed with all of the attention he was getting from our staff and volunteers. Please submit your application today and see if Wesley can be your lifetime companion.

Foster Update 8/26/10: I took Wesley to visit our very generous supporters at the Federal Reserve Bank of Atlanta on Wednesday 8/25 and everyone who met him simply fell in love. Having a hectic week scheduled, I wasn't planning to foster a dog, but Wesley won me over.

Since he has been at my house, he has proven to be gentle, calm and affectionate - even with my 15 month old son who likes to hug dogs... (poor Wesley.) He also really enjoys playing with my very rambunctious dog. He lets her boss him around and just soaks up the attention.

I think Wesley would snuggle in my lap all day if I could sit still long enough to allow that. He is snoozing at my feet as I type this. Wesley is housebroken and crate trained, but needs to improve his leash-walking skills. He has a gorgeous, shiny, soft coat - amazing since he is obviously quite malnourished. I can't imagine how handsome he will be once he is up to a healthy weight.

Some family is going to be so lucky to have Wesley in their lives!

Wesley is taking some time off to gain weight and is currently not available for adoption.

Benny is a precious five year old Shih Tzu who weighs 17 pounds. (He could benefit from a weight-loss plan that would help him shed 5-7 pounds). This cutie came to us after he was abandoned by his former owner.

Poor Benny waited patiently outside his former family's apartment for them to come back for him.  Sadly, they did not.  The neighbors saw Bennie and gave him food and water so he wouldn't perish in the awful heat of the summer.  The neighbors called us and asked us to help find Benny a new forever home.

Bennie can be a little timid at first, but once he knows you won't hurt him, he is a silly love-muffin of a dog.  He makes little grunting sounds to talk to you and share his innermost thoughts about the world.

Benny is in a foster home and available for adoption on Saturday.

Foster Report: Benny is a really great dog! He's housebroken (no accidents), walks well on a leash, never barks, gets along with the other dogs we meet during our walks, seems to have been trained to "sit" when asked, is playful and loves to cuddle. When we first picked him up he seemed pretty sad and timid, but once we got him home he began rolling on the carpet and wanting his tummy to be scratched. I think that given his recent history of abandonment, he wants to be around people as much as possible, but surprisingly he seems fine when he's left alone, too. Still, when we are home he wants to be near us. Benny is going to make a wonderful companion for his forever family.

A note from a friend: Raven walks so well on a leash. Just when you think she cannot get any cuter, she'll "sit pretty" for a treat. She can sit on her bottom and balance with her front paws up. She also knows how to sit and shake. She is a girl of many talents. Raven also requests a home without any kitties.

Cooper is a three year old male Lhasa Apso or close mix.  He weighs about 18 pounds and came with a lot of matted fur, which will be banished by the time you see his photo.

Cooper is a genuinely happy guy who will bring a smile to your face, with his cute looks and wagging tail. Cooper is a very happy boy because the angel of death did not stop at his doorstep.

The folks at animal control had to quarantine a section of the kennel space because a vet made a mistaken diagnosis of distemper in a dog that had been adopted from that shelter.  The result was a lot of needless euthanasia.  Several dogs were put in quarantine pending the results of a test to see if the sick dog actually had distemper. Lucky for those put in quarantine, the dog did not have distemper and they got to live to see another day.  Unfortunately, the quarantine area could not house all the dogs that were potentially exposed, and many dogs died needlessly because of the mis-diagnosis.

Cooper is available for adoption

Tuesday through Saturday.

Jenna is a one to two year old female Terrier Spaniel mix of some sort.  Please let us know if you can help us identify her mix... She has the coloring and patterns of a German Shorthaired Pointer, the long torso of a Dachshund, and the face of a Spaniel.  Jenna weighs 16 pounds and is a stocky little girl.

Jenna came from an outlying animal control facility with little space.  That means Jenna's lifeline was about to come to an end in a few days.

Jenna is a bit overwhelmed by her move to the big city, but she seems to be a sweet and gentle little girl. She's not familiar with the concept of walking on a leash yet, but she will get some lessons soon.
