How to Adopt Sponsor a Pet

Last Updated 11/06/09

Adoption Hours:

Tuesday-Friday: 11am-4pm

Saturday: 12pm-5pm

Hope is an 8 month old, 20 pound mixed breed pup who came to Atlanta Pet Rescue from an outlying animal control facility. We were contacted about this girl and were eager to help. Hope had a broken right rear leg and several areas of burned skin that are now healed.  We don't know how this happened to this precious dog, but we were committed to getting her well.

Hope has recovered nicely, and now uses her broken leg.  She's ready for her forever home, and is so deserving!

Hope is in a foster home and available for adoption on Saturday.

Foster Report: Hope is one amazingly sweet, lovable, and gorgeous dog.  Despite all she’s been through she could care less about feeling sorry for herself and is only focused on being a happy-go-lucky puppy.  Her favorite phrase to hear is, “Oh, what a cute dog”, and she gets to hear plenty of it when she goes to the park.  She LOVES to meet new people, is very sweet with children, and hasn’t met a dog yet that she didn’t want to play with.  She’s crate trained and is quick to grasp the rules of the house, but she’ll still need all of the discipline and love a typical puppy deserves.  She walks great on the leash and in one weekend has become a natural at “sit” and “shake”.  So stop by and say “Hi” to Hope for 5 minutes and I promise you’ll want to take this sweet girl home with you.

Hope springs eternal!

All you need is Hope!

Hope lifts you up where you belong!

Hope is a many-splendored thing!

Hope is an angel on springs! Huh?

Hope is young dog who had terrible things happen to her. She should be paranoid, psychologically messed up and terrified but someone forgot to tell her. Instead she is pure happiness, joyful, the hit of the dog park, everyone’s best friend, Miss Congeniality, a streak of bouncing black energy. Within five minutes of meeting her you forget the burn scar on her shoulder, the skin’s dark and smooth and she feels no pain there. The damaged ear looks natural (and cute). The broken leg – totally healed! This dog is incredible. She’s had so much attention at the dog park – “what happened to her?”, “wow, she’s wonderful!” Last night a Rottweiler-owning young uniformed cop fell for her and immediately called his neighbor to come to the park to see her because she was so adorable! The neighbor fell in love.

Hope is lovely at home too, does okay in the car, is great in a crate, adores her toys, and is all about being on your lap. She’s also got a big chunk of puppy in her and everything is interesting. She needs to have lots of toys around. I’ve had her four days (November 4, 2009) and we’re working on the house training, I think it will be easy. Hope is super smart and willing to please. She’s good on a leash, sits and shakes on command, we’re working on “down” and “stay”. She adores all people but will be happiest in an active home and preferably with another active dog to wrestle with, her bounce factor is high and she needs exercise. She is NOT a couch potato, grin, but she is twenty pounds of pure gorgeous-ness!

Shelby is a one old, 18 pound Sheltie mix. Shelby came to Atlanta Pet Rescue from an outlying animal control facility where she had been picked up by animal control after she and several other dogs were abandoned in a vacant house with  no food or water. Most of the dogs were euthanized because they were completely terrified of humans. Shelby was spared, though, because she showed promise of being sweet and affectionate towards humans.

Shelby has been afraid of most everything, and will need an experienced and very patient owner to help her learn about the world. Shelby will accept attention and affection, and even moves towards you when you stop petting her. We think she is young enough to turnaround and become a great family pet. She has very pretty markings and soft fur. Shelby is in a foster home learning how to enjoy the comforts of a nice, warm home and human companionship.

Shelby is taking some time off to work on her social skills.  She is currently not available for adoption.

Foster report 4/6/09: Shelby does not yet understand playing with other dogs or toys but she will most likely get there in two to three weeks. She still flinches at at loud noises and we still are working on house training, leash walking, and trying to learn to eat out of a dog dish. So far she will eat her food only if I put it directly on the floor. Shelby loves affection and is beginning to come when I call her.  She is losing some of the ready-to-flee-at-any-moment stances though she does have her "safe places" that she goes to when she is unsure. Shelby will need a person who is patient and willing to wait for the big payoff of having her complete devotion.

Foster update 6/5/09: Shelby is making great strides in learning the joys of being a dog and having a home. She now plays with toys- although toys that squeak scare her-with my dogs and with me. She loves to snuggle and play in the morning and she consistently wakes up around 6am. She is making progress with the housebreaking but she needs to be taken out on a consistent schedule to not have accidents. She has learned to sit and is food and praise motivated. She has a long way to go with respect to walking on a leash. She will walk on a leash in the backyard for about 5 minutes.  Outside the gate and on the sidewalk is another matter. It just seems like all the sensory information overwhelms her and after about 5 minutes freezes. So, this is something that will take a patient person to help her overcome her fears. Shelby is scared of unfamiliar noises.  While quite affectionate, she has to be approached slowly. She is a wonderful companion and totally adorable-especially when she goes into a play bow or "talks" (not barks) to get your attention.

Update 10/29/09: Shelby has been attending a special training class for fearful dogs. A huge thanks goes out to Myra for her willingness to "go the extra mile" in helping Shelby become the best dog she can be.

Thank you Leesia Teh Photography!

Willie the Wiggler is a 1-2 year old male Cocker Spaniel. His pattern is called "Party Mix" and Willie is sure to be the life of any party because he is happy and eager to join in with whatever you are doing. Willie seems to have what it takes to be a great family pet.

Willie had to be completely shaved because he arrived in full dreadlocks and smelling dreadful, too. He is crate trained and gets along well with the dogs at our shelter. Willie acts as though he is just experiencing life for the first time, and he likes it.

Willie is available for adoption

Tuesday through Saturday.

Foster report 9/29/09: From Willie, " I am what people call "cute as a button" - but looks aren't all that I can offer, I have a great personality, too. Currently I am on a mission to find a new home and family to call my own. I am a great catch and I am a playful and active guy, so I'd appreciate a fenced yard and maybe a dog-buddy to play with - but that is optional.

I am not a runner so if you are looking for a running buddy - it's not me! I am loyal and protective and don't understand why barking at suspicious people that are getting too close to my home or my family is wrong - so it would be good if you could be a patient teacher. I love company so it would be nice if I wouldn't be alone too much - I don't mind kids or cats - actually I like them. Kids shouldn't be too small as I easily get carried away when playing and cats might have a hard time with me playfully chasing them and trying to make them play with me, if they are not used to dogs.

After a long day I like to take it easy and a spot next to you on the sofa should be available for me. What you are getting? A loyal companion that won't leave your side, and I mean that literally.  You are getting a friend that will listen to all you have to say and a dog to enjoy walks with out in the green. I am fine with walking on a leash. I am a cuddle muffin for lazy evenings on the sofa, a clown that will make you smile on every single day and whatever else you want me to be! Where's the hook? Well, I don't like to be alone and get anxious when separated from my human. I am very curious and stick my nose in everything. I have to admit that I might make use of those big sad puppy eyes of mine to persuade me to give me some of that yummy human food, and I have been told that I am snoring when laying on my back, even though I consider it a PURR.

So if you have the time, a nice fenced-in yard and a lot of love to give - I could be the one taking up that free spot on your sofa!"

Star is a 2 year old purebred Pug. She was given up by her former owner because the owner had fallen on hard times and moved back with relatives who would not let her dogs live in the house. Star had a litter of puppies recently, so her tummy is still a bit loose. It will tighten up in another few weeks.

Star is housebroken, good with kids and dogs.

Star is in a foster home and available for adoption on Saturday.

Both Bubblegum and Annabelle had their teeth cleaned along with their basic veterinary procedures.  If you can help with the cost of Bubble's veterinary care, please click on the "Sponsor Me" link below.

Quigley is a 15 pound, 4 year old, Poodle mix who came to Atlanta Pet Rescue from a rural animal control facility. Quigley is as cute as a button and is eagerly seeking a new loving home.

Quigly had not received proper dental care and was in desperate need of a dental cleaning. If you can help pay for the cost of  a dental cleaning, please click on the "Sponsor Me" link below.

Quigley is in a foster home and available for adoption on Saturday.

Foster Report: Quigley, who is also known as “Quiggles”, “Q” or “Sweetie”, is absolutely adorable.  He has a wonderful and very sweet disposition.  He is very loving and responds well to hugs, pets and verbal interaction.  He walks well on the leash and enjoys being outside.  He gets along great with other dogs and cats.  He was really good with all the trick-or-treaters he met Halloween night, running to the door to greet all with a wag of his tail.  He is not reliably house trained, so we are working on this using a belly band and a crate.  My bet is that he will have house training down this week as he is already using the doggie door!

I always have a smile on my face!

Scottie is a 2.5 year old, 22 pound male Scottie who has a sad story with a happy ending.  Scottie was purchased from a pet store when he was a tiny pup.  His owner's mother developed cancer and became very ill.  Scottie's owner had an awful lot on her plate then, so decided to return Scottie to the "nice lady" at the pet store.  Two years pass...

Scottie's owner was looking at pets on a website that advertizes free-for-the-asking items and noticed a male Scottie dog named Scottie.  Her interest was sparked, so she called and went to get Scottie.  When she saw Scottie, her heart broke, because he was filthy, flea infested and was little more than skin and bones.

She took Scottie to her vet immediately where he was treated for fleas and intestinal parasites.  Because he was so thin, they feared he had internal problems.  An x-ray was taken that showed Scottie had dirt, stones and bone chips in his stomach, and nothing more.

Scottie has put on 8 pounds in the past 12 days and is feeling great.  He still should gain about a pound or maybe two.   Despite what he's been through, Scottie is friendly with strangers, eager for attention and seems healthy now.  He is food bowl aggressive, so must be fed separately from other dogs, but that may change after a while.

Scottie is available for adoption

Tuesday through Saturday.

Thurston, as in Thurston Howell III, is a 1.5 year old, 21 pound Shihtzu Cocker Spaniel mix who was surrendered to Atlanta Pet Rescue by his previous owner who has lost her job and was no longer able to care for him. We have confirmation of Thurston's mix of breeds as the origingal breeder admitted to an "accidental" breeding of Thurston's parents.

Thurston is a wonderful dog. He gets along with everyone he meets. He loves kids and will even attempt to entice non-playful dogs to participate in his game. Thurston is also housetrained and cratetrained! Wow...quite a list of accomplishments for this handsome young dog! If you are interested in adopting, please submit your application today. This guy won't last long.

Thurston is not yet available for adoption.
