We are open for adoption:

Tuesday-Thursday: 11am-3pm

Friday-Saturday: 11am-4pm

Coco is 5 year old female Poodle. She weighs 8.5 pounds and has been shaved down because she had been neglected for many years while living as a "breeder dog" in an Alabama Puppy Mill.  She's looks and acts like a pathetic little waif--little more than skin and bones, and is very, very shy.

Coco has had poor medical attention throughout her life, and probably poor quality food, too.  She needed s a major dental along with her spay surgery.  When her hair grows back, she will be a lovely little Chocolate Poodle, but for now, she looks far from that.

Coco is in a foster home and available for adoption on Saturday.

Betty is 5 year old female Poodle. She weighs about 9 pounds, and ended up in a local animal control facility as a stray. Someone had cut her hair short recently, so we don't think she was out for long. Betty is a charming little imp and completely housebroken. She gets along very well with the other dogs at our shelter.

You may be able to see it if you look for it - her right rear leg was broken at some point in her life, and never set properly, so it now has a permanent kink and she cannot walk or stand on that leg.

We will have her leg evaluated and learn if her leg can be repaired, if it should be amputated, or if she's OK to live with it like it is. Please watch our website for updates on her status.

If you can help contribute to the costs of her medical attention, please click on the "Sponsor Me" link below.

Betty is available for adoption by appointment!

Update 6/2/08: Dr. Whittle at Paces Ferry Veterinary Clinic believes Betty's leg can be saved through reconstruction of her knee joint, and he has generously offered to perform that delicate surgery.

Update 6/10/08: Good news for Betty. Her leg problem was the result of a luxating patella. This is a very common ailment and our friend Dr. Whittle is just  the man to fix it! Betty will need cage rest for a few weeks combined with antibiotics and pain management. We expect her to make a full recovery!

Update 7/11/08:  Betty had a major setback, as her knee is again out of joint (luxated patella).  She will return for a follow up exam with Dr. Whittle to see what to do next...  Please watch our website for updates on her condition.  We expect another surgery will be planned.  Whether it is a repair or amputation is yet to be determined.

Update 7/15/08: Betty has suffered a setback, and her knee is out of joint again. Dr. Whittle, at Paces Ferry Veterinary Clinic, feels confident that her knee can be repaired. She's scheduled for another surgery on 7/23.

Bambi was adopted on 7/19/08!

Thank you!

Kaleb is 1-2 year old, 8 pound Poodle that was rescued from an outlying animal control facility. Kaleb has begun his life on a very rocky start. This poor boy was brought into animal control as a stray and with all the bones in his right foot broken.  Once Kaleb is taken to the vet we will be able to determine whether or not if surgery is an option or if he will have to have it amputated. To add insult to injury, Kaleb also has cherry eye in both eyes that will also require surgery.

Through all of this, Kaleb remains an absolute dream. He has a very loving and affectionate temperament and all he wants to do is curl up in your lap.

If you would like to help with Kaleb's medical expenses, just click the "Sponsor Me" link shown below.

Kaleb is not yet available for adoption.

Update 6/10/08: Kaleb's leg seems to be holding together nicely with just the cast. No surgery recommended at this time. He is in good spirits.

Update 6/21/08: Little Kaleb is having his foot rebandaged twice a week, and he is getting around well on it. It's easy to tell where he is because it thumps when it hits the floor.

Update 7/03/08: Kaleb still needs another 6 weeks of weekly rebandaging with another x-ray in a month to check on how the bones are healing.  This type of fracture takes a long, long time to heal.  In the meantime, he's had his eye surgery and has been neutered.

Foster Report 7/11/08: Kaleb is a dream. He is so, so sweet. He loves to cuddle and be held. He is playful, but of course running play is discouraged. He will lay on his back and bat at my hand like a kitten. He doesn't chew shoes, but he does drag the lighter ones (slippers and flip flops) into his bed to sleep with. He is caught in the act in one of the photos. He is starting to settle in and feel more and more comfortable in his new surroundings. He is becoming less dependent. He will go into a different room in the house and sleep without needing to be right next to me.  He is also cowering less and less each day. He's a trooper.

Miz Jackson is a spunky senior Shih Tzu. She ended up as a "stray" at animal control after her owner decided she didn't have time for Miz' Jackson any more.

Despite her age, Miz Jackson is full of action.  She acts like a 3-year-old, and is cute as a button.  Her hair-do is a bit choppy in these photos. She was such a matted wreck when she got to animal control, they gave her a buzz cut to get rid of all her mats.  When her hair grows back, Miz' J will be a real looker!

Miz Jackson is a cuddly girl who loves to play with soft toys or chew on a nylabone. She hasn't a mean bone in her body, and just wants someone to show her a good time.

If you can find a tiny place in your home and a big place in your heart, Miz Jackson would like to fill them.  Her next stop, however, is the vet's office for vaccinations, a dental and a spay surgery. If you would like to help pay for her medical expenses, please click on the "sponsor me" link below.

Update 6/4/08: Miz Jackson made herself very much at home once she came to my house. She no longer looked forlorn but, instead, scoped out where the food and water dishes were, the backyard and then, with some persistence, let me know quickly that she loved to go for walks.

She seems to be a very happy little girl. While she needs continued work on housebreaking,  everything else about her shouts out "Please adopt and love me!!!". She is a great companion and quite spry for her age. Her fur is so soft that I just know her coat is going to be absolutely beautiful when it grows out.

Last but not least. Miz Jackson loves to sleep with me at night and stays cuddled up right next to me until I stir first thing in the morning. Then I whisk her outside so that she can be praised for "holding it in" all night long.

Update 7/10/08: Miz Jackson's colors show truer and truer the longer I have her.  I think that she is slow to trust, but when she does, she does it fully.  While she doesn't mind being around my other dogs (except when they try to take her food - the only time I really hear her bark!!!) her main desire is to be loved by her "person".  She devotedly follows me everywhere in the house during her waking hours and loves going for walks.  Beyond that, she sleeps a lot and is extremely quiet, although she still has a wonderful "presence about her.

Her ideal home will be with an older single person or couple who will spend their time loving on her, reassuring her that she will never be left to fend for herself, and letting her sleep in bed with them.  If these needs are met, she will be a very happy camper and her adopter will realize a huge love that comes from this tiny creature.

Miz Jackson is in a foster home and

available for adoption by appointment

or on Saturday.

Trent is a tiny 3 year old Terrier mix. He may also be a Chihuahua-Poodle cross.. Trent weighs 8 pounds. He was surrendered to animal control along with Polly by their former owner because he was moving. Trent is a cutie who is sure to warm your heart and provide loving canine companionship.

Due to Trent's tiny size, he is looking for a home without children.  He also is somewhat intimidated by other dogs and would prefer to be an "only" dog. Once Trent feels secure, he is a super little guy - friendly, playful and loving.

Trent is available for adoption Tuesday through Saturday.

Chip and Dale are two Yorkie-Chihuahua mix dogs. They are both 2 years old and were surrendered to animal control by their previous owner because he was unable to keep them. Chip weighs about 10 pounds and can be identified by his distinctive brown eyebrows.

Chip is a sweet boy and he's fond of cuddling with his humans. Chip would be entirely happy as an only dog, and appears to be housebroken so far. He's athletic enough to go jogging, but also happy to be a couch potato.

Note from a friend: at Chip's recent photo shoot, he behaved very well. He was surrounded by big dogs - one Great Dane in fact, and he was fairly confident, but would give an acceptable vocal warning - on occasion - when the play got too rough for him.

He did perfectly well with my 18-month-old daughter who was not-so-steadily walking around him and annoyingly offering him leaves and sticks while he tried to rest between photographs.

With the other pups he got a little protective of my lap after we had been snuggling for while. Nothing unacceptable, just a little warning to the big dogs that he was getting lap time - and they were not invited to join.

All told, he was a delight. I fell in love very quickly with Chip. He is precious, and his personality matches his good looks. Full of spunk and yet very sweet and affectionate. It is saying a lot for a dog this size to win my big-dog-lover heart!

Chip is available for adoption

Abby is a 6 year old, 10 pound Pomeranian. Abby was surrendered to APR by her former owner because she was not getting along with all family members.

Abby is a sweet little girl who is looking for a home where life is quiet and stable. Abby is fearful of new things and would prefer to have a consistent routine and clear expectations.

Abby is in a foster home and available for adoption on Saturday.

Foster Report: Abby is such a sweet dog! She is housetrained (yeah!) and even knows how to sit. She is very loyal to her owner and likes to be near you or lay around on the couch. She loves her crate too and we keep her there when we go out during the day. She is still a little scared around new people and barks so we are trying to get her more socialized. While inside she is as quiet as a mouse. She needs an owner that will show her lots of love, trust and consistency.

Funky is a 1 year old, 10 pound Yorkie mix. He's a shy little fellow who loves to be held in your lap. He's calm and gets along with other dogs here at our shelter.

Funky acts depressed at the shelter, but makes a complete change once he gets into a home setting. He's animated, happy and eager to run and romp outside the shelter. Here, he's quiet and stays curled up on a Kuranda bed most of the time.  We think he doesn't like living with so many other dogs.

Funky is available for adoption

Jolie is a sweet 8 month old Chihuahua who came to us from an outlying animal control facility.  Poor Jolie has a bad case of Demodex Mange, which has caused her to lose most of the hair on her body.  With some medication, time, and a little TLC, Jolie should recover and gain her beautiful coat back.

Jolie is a darling girl who just needs a stable forever home that will keep her safe and not let her end up in doggie jail again.

Jolie is not yet available for adoption.

Foster update: Jolie is a precious little girl. The level of neglect that this tiny dog has suffered is unthinkable. After spending the night we have realized that her right eye is not only infected but it also has a huge ulcer. She has obviously been in a lot of pain. Fortunately, we have changed her medication and included pain management as a part of her care. Today she is resting peacefully knowing that she is now in loving hands.

Update 7/10/08: Jolie is doing so well! I can't believe that she has made such wonderful progress in such a short amount of time! A re-check of her eye yesterday revealed that the additional medication is working and her eye is slowly healing. We will continue with the eye drops and recheck next week. Her hair is also growing back. Look closely at the photos to see her bits of "peach fuzz".

Joey is a 1.5 year old, 7 pound Chihuahua that was rescued from an outlying animal control facility. Joey is a cutie pie that has had a very hard life and is very shy. He didn't show well at animal control, so was scheduled for euthanasia if a rescue group didn't get him.  We learned about this cutie and offered him a ticket out.  Thanks to some great volunteers who provided him transport to Atlanta, he is now at our shelter.

Joey enjoys snuggling in your lap, but is extremely sensitive about having his neck touched.  It is about impossible to put a collar on him, because he becomes very, very upset when you try to put it on him.  Other than that, Joey is extremely loving and sweet.  It seems likely that someone has injured Joey in the past, maybe involving his collar, somehow.

He's beginning to be more and more relaxed in his foster home, and comes when he's called, tail held high and wagging.  He still is terrified about having a collar attached.  He will bite, and bite hard when we try.  Other than that, he is a cuddler, and very affectionate.

Joey is available for adoption

Tuesday through Saturday.

Marley is a handsome 1-1/2 year old Chihuahua who weighs 6 pounds.  Marley used to have a home, but he was given up by his former owner when he jumped off the couch and broke his leg. Not wanting to deal with it, his owner turned poor Marley over to animal control. We knew he was too special to pass up, so we quickly took Marley out of animal control to get him well and help him find a proper forever home.

Marley was examined by Dr. Whittle at Paces Ferry Veterinary Clinic. Lucky for Marley, he will not require surgery. But he will have to stay in a cast and on cage rest for 8 weeks, with bandage changes every 2 weeks. If you can help defray the costs of Marley's medical care, click on the "Sponsor Me" link below. Marley will be forever grateful.

Marley is a very friendly guy who is sure to capture your heart. He loves everyone he meets, and will greet you with a big smile and a huge kiss! Due to Marley's fragile state and tiny stature, he would do best in a home without small children.

Update 7/11/08: Poor Marley! His rebandaging showed that he's developed a nasty infection where the cast rubs at the top of his leg. He's now on antibiotics and must wear a funny plastic E-collar to prevent him from chewing at his cast.

Marley is not yet available for adoption.

Leah was adopted 7/18/08!

Leon is a small 6-7 year old Schnauzer. Leon was surrendered to animal control by a woman who had found him three weeks earlier, and was unable to locate his owner. Lucky for Leon, he caught our eye immediately and we brought him to APR.  Leon is quite a handsome guy now, but he was a tangled dirty mess when we first got him.

Leon is very gentle and affectionate.  He gets along well with the other dogs at our shelter and in his foster home.

Buddy is a 2 year old, 11 pound MinPin. Buddy was found as a stray dog several months ago. When no owner was found, his rescuer decided to allow him to stay. Unfortunately, adding one more pooch to the existing 3 did not go very well and Buddy's owner was forced to find Buddy a new home.

Buddy seems to be a bit conflicted about all this change in his life. He is a very active and energetic boy who will need a securely fenced yard and lots of opportunity to run and play. He will also need an understanding owner who will help him become the confident little dog we know he can be. Buddy has requested an adult only home.

Bugsy is a 3 year old, 13 pound JRT-Spaniel mix, or possibly a Pomeranian-JRT mix, or possibly a Sheltie mix. In his present condition, it's just hard to tell...

Bugsy came from a very stressful living situation where he was forced to live outdoors and his daily meals consisted of table scraps. His toenails had grown so long that they had curled under and grown into his pads.

Bugsy has a horrible case of Sarcoptic Mange which looks awful and feels even worse. Although the previous owners claimed they had no idea how this happened, we know better.  Mange can only be brought on by stress. Not only did he have skin issues but his teeth were in horrible shape. Bugsy will definitely need a dental and will more than likely have to have some teeth removed.

This poor little fellow is going to need a lot of help before he will be better again. If you would like to help with the cost of Bugsy's medical care and treatment just click the "Sponsor Me" link shown below. Any help toward his care will be greatly appreciated.

In spite of his obvious discomfort, Bugsy is very affectionate and always wagging his tail.  He's good with other dogs and ignores the cat, so far.  When his hair grows back, this little guy will be as cute as he is charming.
