Sasha is a 6 year old Yorkie who weighs 10 pounds. It is obvious that Sasha had a difficult life , as she came to us with almost no hair on her body. She was scab-encrusted from nose to tail.
Sasha began her journey as a puppy mill dog. The puppy mill operator found Sasha was no longer "useful" so poor Sasha found herself at Animal Control. A well-meaning family came along and was afraid that if they did not adopt Sasha from animal control, she would be euthanized because of her skin condition. They adopted Sasha and had her for almost a year, but they could not afford any medical care for her.
Eventually, Sasha ended up here at APR where she is getting the medical care she needs, and hopes to find a forever home that she deserves.
If you can help defray the costs of Sasha's medical expenses, please click on the "Sponsor Me" link below. Any help would be greatly appreciated so that we can help this sweet girl feel like herself again. Stay tuned for updates!
Sasha is not yet available for adoption.
Update 10/27/09: Sasha got a rave review at her dermatology examination today. Her new anti-fungal medicine is working wonders on her skin. Sasha is sprouting more hair and the bumps under her skin are 80-90% improved. The doctor thinks she will continue to improve over the next two months and may even see a complete recovery by then. Sasha is so-o-o shy, but has a great spunky side to her. She's gotten a bit pudgy, and now weighs 9.5 pounds. It's almost a year since she started her journey with APR and the long, long road to recovery. We never imagined a little dog like Sasha could have such a difficult time fighting her way back to health.

Vagabond is senior, 8 pound Poodle that was rescued from an outlying animal control facility where he had little chance of being adopted. He was so matted that he had to have his entire coat shaved off. He's blind in one eye, but gets around just fine and has weak knees that sometimes pop out of joint, so he should avoid jumping off sofas, climbing stairs or rough play. But if you want a cute, cuddly little pal, Vagabond is for you.
Vagabond got a raving review from his foster this week. He said Vagabond is great in the home, housebroken and does not need to be crated when left home alone.
Due to Vagabond's size and shy demeanor, he will need an experienced owner that will give him space and keep him safe from things that are dangerous to tiny dogs, such as jumping from high places, large dogs and small kids. Please submit your application today and see if you can be the right forever home for Vagabond.
Vagabond is in a foster home and available for adoption on Saturday.
Foster Report 10/23/09: Vagabond (a.k.a. Simon) is a sweet, gentle mature soul. He is absolute delight to have as a canine companion. He gets along with adults, children, dogs, and cats. He is perfectly potty trained, walks great on leash, waits by an open door, enjoys car rides, and comes when called. During the day he is happy to hang out with you, go on walks through the neighborhood or on a trail, or visit the local coffee shop. At night, Vagabond loves to cuddle and sleep with you.
Because Vagabond has two weak knees in his hind legs, it is important that he gets his exercise/physical therapy in order to strengthen his knees. These exercises will strengthen his muscles around his knees and might prevent him from needing surgery. Vagabond is very smart and loves these exercises, in fact I have seen an overall improvement in just a couple of weeks!
Vagabond would do well as "an only dog" or he would do well with another small, gentle, mature dog. He really enjoys playing with people.....he
loves to chase your hands like a cat. He also enjoys to chew on soft chew toys, bones and things like pig ears, pig snouts, small beef bones and dehydrated beef sticks.
If you are looking for a sweet, gentle soul for a canine companion.........look no further, Vagabond is waiting for you!

Dot is a 1 year old, 11 pound Terrier-Poodle mix who came to Atlanta Pet Rescue from Alabama. Dot is one of more than 70 dogs seized from a puppy mill.
Like so many puppy mill dogs, Dot is very shy and fearful of new things because she did not receive much socialization from her human caretakers when she was a young pup. She is getting better, slowly.
Dot wants very much to love and be loved, but she's still afraid to try. Each day, Dot looks at us with those big frightened eyes as though she has never seen us before. Her heart pounds when we pick her up, and then she slowly relaxes in our arms.
She developed Kennel Cough while she was at animal control, and her cough got worse and worse. She went to Collier Animal Hospital for some testing, and we learned that the cough has progressed to pneumonia, which was diagnosed after chest x-rays were taken. Dot is taking strong antibiotics to help her get well, and she is slowly improving. If you would like to contribute to dog's medical bills, please click on the "Sponsor Me" link below.
Update 11/08/09. Dot is healthy at last and now ready for her spay surgery.
Dot is available for adoption
Tuesday through Saturday.

Kyle is a very shy 4 year old, 10 pound Toy Poodle that was rescued from an outlying animal control facility. He was probably used as a breeding dog by his former owner, as several others were surrendered by the same owner along with Kyle.
Kyle is a very sweet but understandably shy boy. He probably had a very small world to call his own, and he is overwhelmed in his new circumstances. Kyle is very submissive and is still trying to settle in and get comfortable with his new surroundings. Because he is so small and timid, Kyle would do best in a home without small children.
Kyle walked with very stiff legs, and was examined by Dr. Whittle at Paces Ferry Veterinary Clinic. Dr. Whittle discovered that poor little Kyle had bad knees, and would need surgery to make them work better, mechanically.
Update 11/11/09: Kyle had a second operation on his knee to make it work better. Dr. Whittle was not satisfied with the result of the first surgery, so little Kyle is hoping that the second time will be the "charm" for him and he'll end up with a strong knee that will permit him to run and play as much as he wants.
Kyle is not yet available for adoption.

Bear is a 10 month old, Shihtzu-Pomeranian mix that was rescued from an outlying animal control facility. He was turned in by his former owners because they couldn't afford a pet.
Bear is very spunky and has an outgoing personality. He loves meeting new people and he gets along well with other dogs. He is sure to make a great companion for almost any home. He has a perpetual "smile" on his face. Maybe we should have renamed him "Happy" because it fits him.
Bear is in a foster home and available for adoption on Saturday.
Foster Report: Bear is such a sweetheart; whoever said his name should be "happy" was absolutely right. He's full of energy, but not overwhelming. He loves playing with his plush toys, and scampering around playing with my dog. He's mostly housetrained - being so young, I think he just needs a consistent environment to learn the timing and the rules. He loves to take walks, loves meeting new dogs, and is also trusted out of the crate and in the house all day while I'm at work. He sleeps happily in the dog bed besides ours, and occasionally wants to cuddle up on the bed. He's such a happy guy, I love having him, but I'm sure there's someone else out there just waiting to take this sweetheart home!

Apple is a 3 year old, 13 pound Dachshund who was surrendered to Atlanta Pet Rescue by her previous owner who adopted her from animal control as a gift for someone else. Unfortunately, the recipient did not want a dog and little Apple found herself homeless.
Apple is a very sweet girl. She has demodex mange and still takes an oral medication every day to treat her mange, but she's feeling super.
Apple gets along well with other dogs and is very sweet-tempered with us humans.

Katie is a 5 month old, 12 pound Jack Russell Terrier mix that was rescued from an outlying animal control facility where she had little chance of being adopted.
Katie is a very sweet and submissive girl. All she needs is love and confidence to help her come out of her shell.
Poor little Katie crashed shortly after she arrived at APR and went to the hospital with an undiagnosed ailment. She had to stay for four days, but is back now, and much more outgoing and happy. Katie is eating her kibble and playing with her kennel-mates at APR.
Katie is available for adoption

Bert is a 9 week old, Dachshund/Schnauzer mix puppy that was surrendered by their breeder to a vet clinic we use. The owner agreed to surrender them in return for her promise to get their mom spayed. We stepped in and took Bert to APR to find his forever home. Bert's coat is smooth while Sylvester's coat is more scruffy.
Bert should weigh between 12-15 pounds when he is full grown. He is playful and outgoing and would make a great addition to any loving family.
Bert is available for adoption by appointment only.

Winnie is a bit whiskery like her mother and has ears that stand out from her head. As Winnie grows, they may stand up or fold over... We just don't know quite yet. In any event she is a cutie! Winnie is expected to weigh about 10-15 pounds when full grown.

Cody is a 2 year old Poodle who weighs 10 pounds. This sweet boy came to us from an outlying animal control facility. When he arrived, he was very matted and had to be shaved down.
Cody was really frightened by his changed circumstances and appearance. Once shaved, he was able to feel the wind and the rain on his skin and he was frightened by it all. Now that he's had a bit of time to adjust to it all, Cody is a sweet and affectionate fellow. He's probably best suited as an only dog or with another gentle one as gentle as he is.
Cody is available for adoption
Tuesday through Saturday.

It is with great sadness that we report poor little Venus suffered from neglect all her short life, and her body was weakened by all the parasites that sapped her strength. As a result, she did not have the physical stamina to fight off a virus that she contracted at animal control and passed over the Rainbow Bridge to a place where she will always be warm and well fed, and the sun will always shine on her.

Beasley is a darling 7 pound, 3 year old, Chihuahua Poodle mix who was surrendered to Atlanta Pet Rescue after her owner passed away.
Little "Bee" has lived a very sheltered life and, as a result, she is very timid. Everything is new to this sweet little girl and she will need a patient owner to help her become more comfortable in new environments. Bee never wore a collar or harness before, and she got her food when her former owner threw it on the floor for her. Bee is skinny and very, very scared.
In spite of that, Bee is very sweet tempered and has never offered any signs of aggression. She is simply scared of this great big world. If you have a soft heart and time to work with this precious soul, submit your application today.
Beasley will be available for adoption on Saturday, November 28th.

Buster is a one year old, 11 pound Dachshund and maybe Manchester Terrier mix. Buster has had a very hard life and was surrendered to animal control as a stray with a collar embedded in his neck and two puncture wounds in his neck as well.
In spite of the large wound circling his throat, Buster is a very playful and happy little dog. He seems to respond to the command to "go potty" and is reportedly good with children. Buster is one cute snuggle-bunny who promises to be a fabulous pet!
Buster is in a foster home and available for adoption on Saturday.
Foster Report 11/19/09: Boy is this guy a little Buster! He loves to play all day and gets along well with our dog. He is the happiest little guy!! His favorite thing to do is take a walk on a nice afternoon- likes to meet other doggies at the park. An enclosed backyard is ideal for him- he loves to explore in ours- he likes all the leaves. Buster loves doggy chew toys! It keeps him busy all day while we are away at work. Buster will need little stairs to help him get up on the bed...his little legs are short...he can only manage to jump on the couch. He is also a cuddle bug! This is one of the first foster doggies that likes to be held while he sleeps! He quietly slept beside me all night. The first night he moved around quite a bit because he was exited....now he sleeps the whole night through. He also likes the little doggy bed we put in the living room...likes to sit in it and chew on his toys. He looks and acts like a puppy but this guy is already a year old. His coat is smooth and easy to maintain- he's a soft little guy.
