Itsy is a 12 pound "Beaglette" or Beagle-Chihuahua cross. She is 2 years old and has been a mother recently. She has a tiny stub tail and a brown spot on her back, just above her tail.

Itsy is shy with strangers, but outrageously friendly and playful with people she knows.  She loves to play with soft toys and other dogs.  Her foster mom thinks Itsy would be OK with older children, but due to her initial shyness, would not do well with toddlers.

Itsy formerly belonged to someone who had too many dogs, and let them breed too often. As a result, Itsy wasn't handled as much as she could have been in a home where she was the only pet. She is initially shy, but after about a day, she is friendly, cuddly and playful.   She has also learned to scratch at the door when it's time to go outside, and has been trained to use pee pads, too.

This sweet girl needs a quiet home with someone who wants a dog that will worship them every minute, and love them without reservation.

Itsy is in a foster home and

available for adoption on Saturday.

Itsy is sponsored by:

Amanda D.

Thank you!

Foster Update: Itsy Bitsy is one of the sweetest dogs I've had the pleasure to foster. She is a shy girl at first but warms up quickly once you get her home. She took a few days to warm up to my dogs, but then made up for lost time running around and playing as if she had always been a member of the family.  I think she may have been a boxer in a former life because she has mastered the boxer wiggle when you get home and she is so happy to see you!  After several weeks of diligent work she is housebroken when kept on a schedule and will even do her business on the leash. I think she would be ok with older children as she can be a bit mouthy when she plays. She would love a fenced yard and a doggie companion who can play hard and nap hard.  Nothing makes her happier after an afternoon at the dog park than to lay around with her family in a pile of pups.  Itsy can easily entertain herself with a tennis ball, rope toy or her woobie. She has not quite earned the free run of the house but has no problem going into her crate when there is a treat involved.  In the two weeks she has been with me, she has picked up on the ways of the house very quickly.  She sits with the pack at dinner time and waits for the command to eat. She knows how to get on the stairs so I can put her leash on her to go for our walk, and she walks nicely on a leash.  Itsy is wonderful with my senior cat. I was pleasantly surprised how she handled meeting the diva and ultimate ruler of the house.....no matter what the dogs tell you. If you are looking for a sweet girl who will give you endless love and hours of entertainment, Itsy is the girl for you!

Imani is a beautiful Papillon/Chihuahua mix who is four years old and weighs just 8 pounds. She was surrendered by her former owner she moved to Atlanta and an apartment where pets were not accepted.

Imani is a sweet girl who deserves a loving forever home. She is a bit timid when meeting new people, but she soon warms up once she knows you are her friend. Imani will be a wonderful addition to most any home, but would probably do best in a home without small children.

Imani is available for adoption

Tuesday through Saturday.

Imani is sponsored by:

Steve M.

Thank you!

Foster Update: Imani is one of the sweetest dogs I have ever fostered. Imani has an amazing personality, she has just the sweetest demeanor and loves to cuddle. Her two favorite things to do are to go on long walks and to get a nice scratch behind her ears. She gets along with everyone we meet and loves to play with our other chihuahua. She doesn't mind our cat really, and doesn't pay attention to our Australian Cattle Dog. Imani is a very smart dog and understands what we want her to do and she is eager to please. Imani would be a good family dog, she just loves attention. She is an amazing little dog and is everything you could wish for.

Scooter is a unique-looking two and a half year old Chihuahua Terrier mix who weighs 7.5 pounds. This sweet boy came to us from an outlying animal control facility where he had been surrendered by his former owner without any proof of his previous vaccinations. This was a death sentence for poor Scooter, so he put in a request to be transferred to APR where he could find his perfect forever home.

Scooter is a happy and outgoing little gremlin. He gets along well with other dogs and loves most every human he meets. He will be a wonderful lifetime companion, but due to his tiny size, will probably do best in a home without small children.

Scooter is in a foster home and available for adoption on Saturday.

Prissy is a three year old Shih Tzu who weighs 6 pounds. This darling girl came to us from an outlying animal control facility where she was brought after she was found in a crate in a city park--it was a below-freezing night, too.

Prissy had to be shaved down to relieve her of all her matted fur. Underneath all those mats, Prissy is little more than skin and bones.

She is feeling much better now, but seems to be surprised that she can feel the touch when someone pets her. Prissy is still adjusting to the notion of being held, petted, or scratched behind her ears.  She probably never was treated that way before. Prissy is such a tiny doll!  All she needs to fulfill her dreams is a forever home to call her own.

Prissy is in a foster home and available for adoption on Saturday.

Prissy is sponsored by:

Jennifer C.

Thank you!

Foster Update 2/13/10: I truly wonder if Prissy has ever seen the inside of a home. When I brought her home today, she spent the next several hours just wandering around, seemingly perplexed at her new surroundings. Finally, after about four hours, she cuddled up on the sofa with me and my other little dogs and fell asleep. I think she's going to get to like her new life quickly. One very endearing quality that I have already discovered about her is that she "chirps". I can only imagine what she's trying to say as she realizes that her life has changed dramatically....very much for the better.  She loved taking a walk this evening tucked securely and warmly in my jacket and even chirped her vote of approval halfway through the walk. I won't be surprised if this little tyke isn't a gem in disguise.  ~Gigi

Foster Update 2/24/10: Well, as I suspected, Prissy is indeed a gem.  She is acting as though the world is all new to her, which it probably is, and she's enjoying her newfound freedom.  She's eating well, putting on some much needed weight, acting playful at times, and continuing to do her "chirp" when she wants to communicate.  She's responding much better to being touched and petted and even seeks it out now.  She has even taken a very, very short walk halfway down the street with me but then enjoys being carried in my jacket while I walk my dogs around the neighborhood.   She is going to be a wonderful companion for someone who wants a lapdog, which she is quickly becoming. ~Gigi

Isis is a beautiful Longhaired Dachshund mix who weighs 14 pounds. This sweet girl came to us from an outlying animal control facility.

Isis has a cluster of infected wounds behind her ear that makes it look as though her ear canal is closed shut, but it is pressed closed by an abscess just below the ear itself that is causing the pressure on the ear canal.  Isis is receiving antibiotics to help clear up the infected wound.

We also learned that Isis also has an old fracture in her rear leg.  Dr. Whittle at Paces Ferry Animal Hospital evaluated her x-rays today and concluded that this is an old injury and that Isis has compensated for it and is best left as is.

Through it all, Isis has remained a very sweet and friendly girl. She seems to love the attention of her human friends and should be a wonderful canine companion.

If you can help with the costs of her orthopedic work-up, please click on the "Sponsor Me" link below.

Mr. Chompers is a two year old Poodle who weighs 11 pounds. This pitiful skinny guy came to us from an intown animal control facility where he was picked up as a stray.

Poor Mr. Chompers has not had any care for some time. He is underweight and needs to gain several pounds to be at a healthier weight. He was also badly matted and had to be completely shaved down. Through it all, he has been a friendly and patient guy.

He runs and jumps for joy now that he is not weighed down with those painful mats.  And he can now see the world around him.

Mr. Chompers is not yet available for adoption.

Zuma is a precious three year old Dachshund who weighs 9 pounds. This sweet girl came to us from an intown animal control facility where she was picked up as a stray.  She's at least two pounds underweight, so we are working on getting her fattened up as quickly as possible.

Zuma is a friendly and outgoing girl. She would prefer to be an only dog, because during her stay at animal control, her cell mates beat her up. Zuma loves the attention of her human friends and appears to be housebroken, too.

Zuma is available for adoption

Coco Pebbles is a 7 year old Miniature Pinscher who weighs 10 pounds and is 1-2 pounds overweight. This beautiful girl came to us from a rural animal control facility in Alabama, along with her friend Tippy (shown on the small dog page). They were surrendered by their former owner because they could not afford to feed them.

Coco Pebbles is a friendly girl, as well as a very stunning Min Pin. She gets along with most everyone and does well with other dogs. Coco is housebroken and crate trained. She gets along well with other dog, too. Coco would prefer a home without children, because she is frightened by sudden moves.

Coco had not been flossing or brushing her teeth daily, and as a result had a date with a doggie dentist. Her teeth are now clean and her gums will stay healthy.

Coco Pebbles is available for adoption

We can't imagine why such a cute little puppy would be wandering around unattended.  Pedro is a calm and sweet canine that doesn't ask for too much.  All he needs is a warm lap to lay in and a loving home to call his own forever.  Please submit your application today and see if you are the right match for Pedro.

Beaker is a one year old Cockapoo who weighs 11 pounds. This cute fellow came to us from an outlying animal control facility where they do absolutely no adoptions.

Beaker will need an experienced owner to teach him how to be a well-behaved companion. He is playful and affectionate now, but was very fearful when he first arrived. He needs a home without children and an experienced owner to provide the structured environment Beaker needs.

Beaker is wildly in love with his humans and will dance and prance and throw himself down at your feet, begging for attention. This cute scamp will steal your heart in a minute. He loves tummy rubs and attention of any sort.

Cain is a darling 3.5 month old male Chihuahua puppy who currently weighs 4.2 pounds. He will probably weigh about 10 pounds when full grown.  This big-eared pooch came to us from an outlying animal control facility where he was adopted and then returned two days later because of a family emergency.

Cain is a doll. He loves to sit in your lap or be carried around in your arms. He wags his tail when you talk to him and perks his ears up constantly.  Due to his petite frame he cannot go to a home with young children. Cain would be a great companion for almost any home. Hera is a two and a half year old Chihuahua who weighs just 5 pounds. She has the tiniest body and legs, ever!  This little cutie was surrendered by her former owner because they could no longer care for her. Hera has a scar down her back that, according to her former owner, was from a coyote attack. We are not sure how she could have survived something like that, but it does not slow her down one bit.

Hera is timid at first in her new surroundings and will take a minute or two to adjust. She is just too cute for words, though her picture does not do her justice.  Hera promises to make a wonderful lifetime companion, but because of her tiny size, would do best in a home without young children.

Hera is in a foster home and available for

adoption on Saturday.

Hera is sponsored:

Pipsqueak and Sprite, APR alums

Thank you!

Foster Update 3/6/10: Hera is a doll! She is your typical chihuahua.  She wants to be with her person at all times. She does well with my little chihuahuas, but would be fine as an only dog. Hera is also comfortable with cats, but will taunt them a little, which they are used to. So, if you have cats and they don't want a cute tiny doggie running up to them every now and then, they probably wouldn't want you to bring Hera home. Hera loves to go on walks and play with soft plush toys. She can relax with the best of them though. Hera sure does love to snuggle. She is a true love bug!

We cannot imagine why anyone would give up a dog as sweet as this girl, but we are glad she is here with us now where she will find the forever home she deserves.

Joelle is extremely outgoing and friendly. Her tail is long and curls over her back, giving her a cute profile. She gets along well with other dogs and is fond of her human friends too. Joelle is sure to be a wonderful lifetime companion.

Maude is a darling 1 and a half year old Toy Fox Terrier or close mix who weighs 10 pounds. She came to us from an outlying animal control facility where her chances of being adopted were slim.

Maude is a sweet gal. She gets along well with her new canine friends here, but appears to always be waiting for our staff or volunteers to come give her attention. We think she is telling us that she prefers to be an only pet.  Maude seems to ignore cats, so should be fine in a home with a cat.

Frosty is a handsome 1 year old Bichon who weighs 14 pounds. He was surrendered by his previous owners because the kids did not have the time to care for him. He was a matted mess when he arrived.

Frosty is quite the spunky fella. He loves loves loves to play with other dogs and he loves walks. He does great with children of all ages. Basically, Frosty will take part in any activity that allows him to exert as much energy as possible. He is just a fun loving canine that needs a forever home to call his own.

We think that Frosty has had some bad experiences with kids in the past, and is very shy when you reach out to touch his head. He gets very nervous when he is around small children.

Frosty is in a foster home and available for adoption on Saturday.

We've learned that she is very capable of climbing chain link fences, which is most likely how she ended up at animal control.

Robin is a little shy at first, but once she knows she is safe she relaxes into your arms. She is sweet little girl that will need to go to a home where she can regain her confidence and be loved forever.

Check out my pretty, long legs...

Oso is a cute 1-2 year old Chihuahua who weighs a mere 6 pounds. He came to us from another very large metropolitan Humane Society that did not think he was ready for the adoption floor. He nis not just another cute face! Oso is absolutely adorable and playful and loving once he knows you are his friend.  He adores puppies and especially the cute little squeaky toys they have to play with.

Oso is quite overwhelmed in a shelter environment, but you must trust us when we tell you that he is a very different pooch in a home setting. He hates to be kept in a crate, but will snuggle beside you all night. He doesn't snore, either.

Oso does get along well with other dogs. He would probably do fine in a home with another canine friend that can help him come out of his shell.

Oso is available for adoption

Tenley is a three year old Longhaired Chihuahua who came to us from an Alabama animal control facility where he was seized from a hoarder. Poor Tenley is a bit frightened and is learning to trust us humans.

He has been living in a foster home for the past few days learning what it's like to be a loved and pampered pooch. He will definitely need a patient and understanding owner who can help him come out of his shell. Tenley would do best in a home without small children.

Tenley is in a foster home and available for adoption on Saturday.

Foster Report 3/5/10: Tenley is a stunning little dude with the most beautiful, thick, soft and silky fur coat, yet he's a very easy keeper. He's crate trained and sleeps through the night quietly next to my bed. Unfortunately he is the victim of a hoarding situation and it will take some time to draw out his full personality. I call him Peekaboo because the first time I saw a sparkle in his eyes, he was rolling in a blanket with his paws over his face and he peeked out and almost gave me a smile!

The normal world is all new to him -- the leash, the car, toys, the steps, most things -- but we're working on it. In just a week he has made great strides walking on the leash and hasn't had a single accident. Peekaboo would love to have a friend but will be OK as a single dog if he can be with his people all the time.

He will need a very gentle and patient owner who can work to build his confidence and let him learn to know and trust people. The good news is that he just gets better every day and at this rate, he will be a happy, bouncing, loving best friend in no time! ~Claire

Max is a precious one and a half year old Chihuahua who weighs 6 pounds. This little cutie came to us from an outlying animal control facility where his former owner left him because their child was allergic to Max.

Max is an outgoing and friendly little guy who quickly warms up to everyone he meets. Due to his tiny size, he would do best in a home without small children. Max promises to make a wonderful lifetime companion.

Max is in a foster home and available

for adoption on Saturday.

Foster Report 3/5/10: Max has only just arrived but I already know that he's an adorable little rascal. He is a tiny little guy with a thick, soft coat of spots and speckles -- he's so cute! Max is a high energy doggie full of play and puppy kisses. He seems comfortable with, and makes play bows to dogs of the same size. He seems a bit wary of those much larger than himself, but I do think he would do best with dog siblings in his forever home.

He likes the plush toys, walks well on leash, sleeps through the night, and rides well in the car. More than anything, I think he wants to be with his people. Max is a great snuggle buddy and will curl up in your lap at any opportunity, tucking his head into the crook of your arm. Perfect! ~Claire
