Sasha is a 5 year old Yorkie who weighs 8 pounds. It is obvious that Sasha has had a difficult life so far, as she came to us with almost no hair on her body. She was mostly scab-encrusted from nose to tail.

Sasha began her journey as a puppy mill dog.  The puppy mill operator found Sasha was no longer "useful" so poor Sasha found herself at Animal Control.  A well-meaning family came along and was afraid that if they did not adopt Sasha from animal control, she would be euthanized because of her skin condition. They adopted Sasha and had her for almost a year, but they could not afford any medical care for her.

So Sasha ended up here at APR where she is getting the medical care she needs, and find a forever home that she deserves.

If you can help defray the costs of Sasha's medical expenses, please click on the "Sponsor Me" link below. Any help would be greatly appreciated so that we can help this sweet girl feel like herself again.  Stay tuned for updates!

Sasha is not yet available for adoption.

Update 10/27/09:  Sasha got a rave review at her dermatology examination today.  Her new anti-fungal medicine is working wonders on her skin. Sasha is sprouting more hair and the bumps under her skin are 80-90% improved.  The doctor thinks she will continue to improve over the next two months and may even see a complete recovery by then.  Sasha is sooo shy, but has a great spunky side to her.  She's gotten a bit pudgy, and now weighs 9.5 pounds. It's almost a year since she started her journey with APR and the long, long road to recovery.  We never imagined a little dog like Sasha could have such a difficult time fighting her way back to health.

Vagabond is senior,8 pound Poodle that was rescued from an outlying animal control facility where he had little chance of being adopted. He was so matted that he had to have his entire coat shaved off. He's blind in one eye, but gets around just fine and has weak knees that sometimes pop out of joint, so he should avoid jumping off sofas, climbing stairs or rough play. But if you want a cute, cuddly little pal, Vagabond is for you.

Vagabond got a raving review from his foster this week. He said Vagabond is great in the home, housebroken and does not need to be crated when left home alone.

Due to Vagabond's size and shy demeanor, he will need an experienced owner that will give him space and keep him safe from things that are dangerous to tiny dogs, such as jumping from high places, large dogs and small kids. Please submit your application today and see if you can be the right forever home for Vagabond.

Vagabond is in a foster home available for adoption on Saturday.

Foster Report 10/23/09: Vagabond (a.k.a. Simon) is a sweet, gentle mature soul.  He is absolute delight to have as a canine companion.  He gets along with adults, children, dogs, and cats.  He is perfectly potty trained, walks great on leash, waits by an open door, enjoys car rides, and comes when called.  During the day he is happy to hang out with you, go on walks through the neighborhood or on a trail, or visit the local coffee shop.  At night, Vagabond loves to cuddle and sleep with you.

Because Vagabond has two weak knees in his hind legs, it is important that he gets his exercise/physical therapy in order to strengthen his knees.  These exercises will strengthen his muscles around his knees and might prevent him from needing surgery.  Vagabond is very smart and loves these exercises, in fact I have seen an overall improvement in just a couple of weeks!

Vagabond would do well as "an only dog" or he would do well with another small, gentle, mature dog.  He really enjoys playing with people.....he

loves to chase your hands like a cat.  He also enjoys to chew on soft chew toys, bones and things like pig ears, pig snouts, small beef bones and dehydrated beef sticks.

If you are looking for a sweet, gentle soul for a canine companion.........look no further, Vagabond is waiting for you!

I'm such a smart boy!

Here I am working on physical therapy with my foster mom.

Don't let my size fool you...I'm really good at this agility thing!

Dot is a 1 year old, 11 pound Terrier-Poodle mix who came to Atlanta Pet Rescue from Alabama. Dot is one of more than 70 dogs seized from a puppy mill.

Like so many puppy mill dogs, Dot is very shy and fearful of new things because she did not receive much socialization from her human caretakers when she was a young pup. She is getting better, slowly.

Dot wants very much to love and be loved, but she's still afraid to try. Each day, Dot looks at us with those big frightened eyes as though she has never seen us before.  Her heart pounds when we pick her up, and then she slowly relaxes in our arms.

She developed Kennel Cough while she was at animal control, and her cough got worse and worse.  She went to Collier Animal Hospital for some testing, and we learned that the cough has progressed to pneumonia, which was diagnosed after chest x-rays were taken. Dot is taking strong antibiotics to help her get well, and she is slowly improving. If you would like to contribute to dog's medical bills, please click on the "Sponsor Me" link below.

Update 10/23/09.  Dot was rechecked by Dr. Shannon Ewing at Collier Animal Hospital today.  Follow up x-rays show that Dot's pneumonia is just about gone.  Dr. Ewing wants Dot to continue her antibiotics for another week to be sure we have the pneumonia knocked out for good.

Dot is not yet available for adoption.

Abigail is a 3 year old precious Pekingese.  She has the typical Peke personality. She's spunky, affectionate and talkative. Abby weighs about 13 pounds and has a soft fur coat.

Abigail came to us from an out-of-state shelter where she had slim hopes of finding an adopter. Those hopes dimmed even more once it was learned that she has Heartworms. We wanted to see this precious pooch find a forever home that will take good care of her and see that she never develops heartworms again. All it takes is a monthly medication, and she will be safe and healthy.

She has been treated for heartworms and is now on the road to recovery.   If you would like to make a donation to help for her medical care, please click on the "Sponsor Me" link below.

Abigail is currently not available for adoption.

Foster Report: Abigail is a gorgeous young lady with the most wonderful fur coat and stunning eyes. She's as sweet as can be and could aptly be named "Honey Bun". Abigail is sweet and easy-going with all people and all other dogs and is not a typical Pekingese. She is the perfect size for cuddling on your lap in the late evening when she has tired for the day. She can be very outgoing and tries to engage all the other dogs in rambunctious play. When playing with others or her toys, she hops back and forth and loves to run. She is also very good about entertaining herself with her favorite bone.

Abigail is housebroken and prefers the yard to do her business, but she loves to go for a walk at any time and also rides beautifully in the car. She is very quiet and has only barked when she needs to go out. She's as close to perfect as they come! It has been very difficult to keep her quietly resting while she recovers from her heartworm treatment because she's such a happy girl! She will need to stay completely quiet for the next three weeks to keep her well.

While Abigail was under anesthesia with her spay surgery, she had a dental cleaning and now has beautiful pearly whites. Besides the heartworm disease, Abigail is recovering from an ear infection, urinary tract infection, and being malnourished. She has improved dramatically and will be in excellent condition very soon.

Abigail needs a like-minded, playful, doggie friend to keep her company all the time and a home where she will receive the loving attention and care she deserves. Abigail is an ideal pet and the most fabulous friend!   ~Claire

Fresca was adopted 11/4/09!

Fresca was sponsored by:

Thank you!

Kyle is a very shy 4 year old, 10 pound Toy Poodle that was rescued from an outlying animal control facility. He was probably used as a breeding dog by his former owner, as several others were surrendered by the same owner along with Kyle.

Kyle is a very sweet but understandably shy boy. He probably had a very small world to call his own, and he is overwhelmed in his new circumstances. Kyle is very submissive and is still trying to settle in and get comfortable with his new surroundings. Because he is so small and timid, Kyle would do best in a home without small children.

Kyle walked with very stiff legs, and was examined by Dr. Whittle at Paces Ferry Veterinary Clinic.  Dr. Whittle discovered that poor little Kyle had bad knees, and would need surgery to make them work better, mechanically.

Update 11/04/09: Kyle was rechecked today and Dr. Whittle is not entirely please with the result so far.  Poor little Kyle may need another operation to try to fix his knee.

Kyle is not yet available for adoption.

Annabelle is a 5 year old, 10.5 pound Bichon that was surrendered to us by her previous owner. Annabelle came to us along with Bubblegum and Possum (small dog page) because her owner had too many dogs and wanted to reduce her numbers.

Annabelle is very sweet but overwhelmed by her change in circumstances. She has had a sheltered life to date. She does well with other dogs but will need someone that is patient and loving to help her learn to trust humans. When we got her, she was in the front seat of the car with her former owner.  She was spunky and outgoing in that setting, but in a bustling, loud place with lots of strange dogs is a completely different situation than what she's been accustomed to. Because she is timid, We think she would do best in a home without small children.

Annabelle had her teeth cleaned along with all the routine veterinary cares we provide before adoption. If you would like to contribute to Annabelle's veterinary expenses, please click on the "sponsor me" link below.

Betty is a very cute 1.5 year old, 12 pound Boston Terrier that came to us from a remote animal control facility. She is a little thin but will fill out now that she is getting the proper diet.

Betty is an active little Boston Terrier with a sweet disposition who is sure to make a wonderful companion dog. She is small for a Boston, so she should fit right into any home. Betty loves her humans, and would rather not have to share them. Betty will do best as an only dog, in a cat-free environment.

Iris is a 2 year old, 9 pound Pekingese that was rescued from an outlying animal control facility. Iris is a very shy girl that can be niippy in new situations, like the one she finds herself in now.

She gets along well with other dogs but because of her timid demeanor Iris would do best in a home with an experienced dog owner and no children.

Iris is available for adoption

Tuesday through Saturday.

Foster Report 10/22/09:  Iris is now my best friend, and she follows me everywhere.  All it took was a few 1/4 inch cubes of cheese, and she was my best friend.  It's understandable that she was blown over by her relocation from her former home to animal control to APR in a few hours' time.

From Iris:  "And the nerve of those people to try to give me a bath and trim my precious toenails without even a proper introduction!  Then they poked me with needles... (who needs vaccines anyway) Yikes!  Well, that is enough to send any Southern Belle into a tizzy!!!  Need I say more.  A little courtesy goes a long way.  I am a lover and a sweetie, even if I snore when I sleep."

Bear is a 10 month old, Shihtzu-Pomeranian mix that was rescued from an outlying animal control facility. He was turned in by his former owners because they couldn't afford a pet.

Bear is very spunky and has an outgoing personality. He loves meeting new people and he gets along well with other dogs. He is sure to make a great companion for almost any home. He has a perpetual "smile" on his face.  Maybe we should have renamed him "Happy" because it fits him.

Bear is in a foster home and available for adoption on Saturday.

Hi, there!  My name is Lola, and I am looking for a new home. A nice lady got me out of the traffic on a busy road, and then she tried to find my owners, but they never came looking for me.  I couldn't stay with the nice lady, because she had a big dog that wanted me gone.

I'm a cutie, don't you think? And my personality is just as nice. I am mostly Chihuahua, weigh about 12 pounds and am about one year old, according to the doctor that looked me over. I had a lot of fleas when the nice lady got me, but they're all gone now, thank goodness!

I am ready for adoption, so send in your application now, so you can come get me real soon!

Lola is in a foster home and available for adoption on Saturday.

Foster Report 11/5/09: She's cuddley, she's sweet, she's playful...she's Lola! Quickest way to her heart is to give her a belly & head rub! She'll fall asleep standing up. I left Lola and my little trouble maker Biscuit home alone from 9am-7pm and not one accident. She even made Biscuit behave! Lola and Biscuit get along great...she likes everybody. She's a smart doggy that will make the PERFECT and loveable four legged best friend for anyone.
