Just this side of heaven is a place called
the Rainbow Bridge.
|
When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge. There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together. There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable. All the animals that had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor. Those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by. The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.
They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent. His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.
You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.
Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together.......

Abbey (Boxer) & Jake (Dalmatian)
Abbey was adopted from a farm in North Carolina. She was the runt of the litter and was mischievous from the beginning. She managed to destroy most of the house in her first 3 months with us – what a handful! A typical Boxer, she was stubborn, loyal & very loving. Unfortunately, she developed cancer at only 8 years old and it took her quickly. Her spirit lives on in my heart – I still miss her.
Jake was rescued from an abusive owner also in North Carolina. He and his siblings had been beaten and Jake was very timid and had trouble with his bowels all his life. I don’t know what they did to him exactly, but it took years to fully gain his trust. Despite this beginning he was so loving & loyal and would do anything to make us happy. His “sister” Abbey gave him a hard time, but Jake never let it bother him…he was a true blessing. He was always my “boy”.

Angelina
Her name was Angelina and she came to us via our dear friend Adolfo who found her hungry and homeless three years ago. From the moment I held her in my arms we bonded. Although her time was short we celebrate her life beautifully lived. She will always be in our hearts. We should all to be so blessed to have an Angelina in our lives at one time or another. We miss her terribly.

Angus
It is with great sadness that we were forced to say goodbye to Angus. Poor Angus was suffering mentally, and he had no quality of life. It was advised that the most humane thing we could do for him was to relieve him of his suffering. This just reminds us that not only can physical maladies leave these poor creatures with no quality of life, but mental ailments can cause a dog to suffer just as much, if not more.
Angus passed peacefully with his devoted foster dad by his side. His foster dad has worked very hard to give Angus the best life he could have these past few months. He made sure that Angus always had a warm bed and never had to spend one night here at the shelter. It is comforting to know that Angus is no longer suffering and is running happily through the meadows over the Rainbow Bridge.

Babe
Babe was a darling seven year old Miniature Poodle.
Shortly after she came to us, Babe developed an issue with her left eye. She went to a specialist and was diagnosed with a detached lens in her left eye. Babe was in pain, so the eye had to be removed to relieve her pain and discomfort.
Unfortunately, the surgery that was in her best interest was not successful and Babe passed away under anesthesia.
She will be greatly missed, most especially by her loving foster mom who devoted so much time and attention to her.

Bean
We are very sad to report that Bean has crossed over the Rainbow Bridge. Although we knew that she had a wealth of issues with her nasal passages and her breathing, what we did not know was that she also suffered from intestinal issues as well. Following Bean's most recent procedure, she stopped eating and spent this entire week in ICU. Bean was not able to recover from all of her ailments. We will all miss this beautiful dog. We are comforted only by the fact that she is no longer suffering.
We would like to thank Bean's

Bella
After a week of cage rest it was obvious that Bella was not getting any better, and was in fact rapidly deteriorating. We took her took her to see an orthopedic specialist who confirmed that she had an torn ACL and had also broken a vertebrae. This was devastating news for all of us. Unfortunately, there is nothing that can be done to correct this injury and upon the advice of the vet, we decided to have Bella humanely euthanized so she would no longer have to be in pain. We will all miss her dearly but are comforted to know she is no longer hurting and can run free like all puppies should be able to do.

Belle
On Saturday, September 7, 2008 our sweet Miss Belle crossed over the Rainbow Bridge. We are all very shocked and saddened by her passing. It appears that her small little body was overcome with some unforeseen illness.
On Friday evening she appeared slightly weak; however, she had not shown any overt signs of illness. By Saturday morning she had passed quietly in her sleep.
Belle was such a dear kitten. We were all in love with her fabulous white whiskers and eyebrows and we will always remember her quirky, fun loving personality. All who knew her will certainly miss our little southern Belle.

Bird
The house is awfully silent without his deafening laughing call. “Bird” was a rescue, a mental cripple in a tiny cage who didn’t know how to fly. I didn’t want him but he became a friend. Living with him was a true experience and he taught me much about bird intellect. Living and flying entirely free in the house at all times he was endlessly inquisitive and ready to investigate/destroy. Bird showed me that old Rolex watches break if you throw them on the floor, emptying the pot of pennies is more fun than picking them up and waking up to the classic call of the Australian outback is the best – at 4 a.m. He made people laugh. He also taught 30 APR foster dogs that you don’t mess with a kookaburra! Bird’s death was accidental, at play with his best friend Aggie. Five days on and Aggie’s still looking for him and I’m only just realizing how unique he was. He was a lifetime experience.

Bonnie
Dear Sweet Bonnie crossed over the Rainbow bridge today. Her suffering was just too great to bear as she was no longer able to breath. Her lungs finally gave way to the severity of her condition. We are always saddened by the loss of a beloved pet; however, when human neglect is responsible for the illness, it seems that much harder.

Callie
It is with great sadness that we say goodbye to little Callie. A couple of weeks ago, the vets found a spot on her lung that they suspected might be cancerous. Despite all of the care and precaution taken with her condition, the spot spread quickly and there was nothing else that could be done to save Callie's life. It was a great pleasure to be able to spend what short amount of time we had with her. She was a loving and wonderful pooch who was adored by everyone, especially her foster mom. We feel better knowing that she is happily running free from sickness in the meadows over the Rainbow Bridge.

Chief (1992- 2009)
Chief was one of those “Best Dog in the World” kind of dogs. True, he had his fair share of youthful bad-boy experiences (like running off with a pack of coyotes). What made him so special was his ability to put people and other dogs at ease. Yes, even those coyotes decided he was OK. Dogs like Chief are the reason people love dogs. Thank you Chief for 16 years of loving companionship. We are glad you made it to all the way to Wales with us. Every minute with you was a gift.

Cricket
She was born to be a show dog on January 17, 1999 in Tennessee. Her original owners were my neighbors.
Cricket jumped in my lap the first time I ever went into their house; she was starved for attention. Our relationship started by my keeping her when the family went on vacations. After their first child, they told me finances were tight and they could not afford Cricket. I started caring for her with fancy haircuts and shots in February of 2005. In August of 2005, my neighbors said that they were giving Cricket away. I was their first choice. So, I became her mama officially in August of 2005.
I never had a dog that let me clean her teeth, paint her toenails white to match mine and played with another dog. Her best canine friend was a mix named Biscuit. Biscuit is lost without his little fancy girl. I know my little wooly lamb will be waiting for me at the Rainbow Bridge. Our family misses her so much! Our hearts are broken.

Delaney
Delaney's blood work results today confirmed that she was already in organ failure. There simply was nothing that her doctors or anyone could do to save her. All we were able to do was relieve her suffering. It breaks our hearts to say goodbye yet again to one of our helpless fur babies.

Dorren
It is with tremendous sadness that we must report that Dorren has crossed over the Rainbow Bridge. After multiple surgeries and weeks of rest, Dorren's body was not able to accommodate the loss of her front leg. Her dislocated hip was not able to stay in the socket and there was nothing that could be done.
We want to extend our unending gratitude to Dr. Whittle and the entire staff at Paces Ferry Veterinary Clinic for their commitment to working with dogs like Dorren and for their tireless efforts to save them.
Dorren was a loving, one of a kind dog that touched the hearts of everyone she came in contact with. Her love of life and gentle spirit will live within each of us and we are happy to have had the opportunity to provide her with the love and attention she so deserved. We will miss her very much!
Many thanks to all who have followed her story and contributed to her care.

Drey
Drey and I spent the past 14 years and 7 months of our lives together. He was a wonderful companion and the best roommate I could ask for. He enjoyed taking long walks through the neighborhood and barking at all of the bigger dogs. He also loved eating raw hide bones and stealing socks and leaving them in his hiding place under the bed. What I miss most about him is the greeting I would receive when I got home. His tail was always wagging a mile a minute and I knew he was smiling inside and out. I like to think he is in a happier place running around barking at all of the big dogs with an endless supply of rawhide bones and unmatched socks. He will be a part of my life forever!

Duncan
We took Duncan to Dr. Whittle at Paces Ferry Veterinary Hospital for an evaluation and to determine his prognosis for medical treatment to alleviate his pain and restore his mobility. Sadly, the news was not good. After reviewing Duncan's X-rays and and examining Duncan, Dr. Whittle concluded that Duncan had so many problems with his knees and hips that he would not regain use of his rear legs and live a normal life.
As you might expect, we had to make the sad, sad decision to put Duncan out of his misery and end his pain and suffering permanently. He was a sweet pooch who should have had a better life, but puppy mill dogs often do not have good genetic backgrounds, and Duncan is a prime example of how an adorable puppy at the pet store ends up.

Elsie
For the last two weeks we have struggled to save Elsie. She has not had much of an appetite, she has been very lethargic and seemed to be in a great deal of pain. Elsie was suffering from a rare digestive disorder or possibly an internal injury associated her broken pelvis. Her digestive problem and the traumatic injury causing her broken pelvis, coupled with the ravages of heartworm disease have been too much for her little body to handle. We are comforted to know that her foster families gave her love, happiness and a comfortable home during her time with us. We are especially grateful for the generous sponsorships and support from all who have
followed Elsie's story. She was a sweet sweet soul. We will miss her dearly.

Fluffy, my little boy and best friend, died Feb. 26th, 2008. He gave almost 14 years of unconditional love and was a most precious blessing. He was by my side through all the ups and downs and had the magic to make me smile, always. We will miss our little baby very much but will cherish many wonderful memories for the rest of our lives.

Fozzy
It is with great sadness that we must say goodbye to little Fozzy. Fozzy left us last night after having complications with heartworm disease. It is extremely heartwrenching to know that Fozzy lost his life to something that is easily preventable. A single dose of heartworm prevention each month is all it takes to prevent this deadly disease. Heartworms are spread from dog to dog by mosquitoes, and it only takes one bite to become infected with the disease. Please consult your vet and give your dog monthly heartworm prevention. It will save their life.

Georgia was one of the most beautiful dogs - inside and out - that I have ever known. Heaven will be a better place now that she is there. Everyone who knew her will miss her kiss-nips, her obsessive love of babies, and her contagious contentment in a warm lap. I never knew a dog who loved to snuggle more.
I know Gussy & Rembert will take good care of you on the other side of the Rainbow Bridge, Georgia. We love you.

Gizmo (Mama's Boy)
The twelve and a half years we had went by so fast. It’s hard when I go home and you're not there to greet me. I can’t believe you’re gone. One of the hardest things I had to do was to let you go. I’m so sorry and I will truly miss you. My heart is broken but my love for you will go on. I know you will greet me when it is my time to go. Until that day, I love you little one and always will.
~ Your mother, Penny T.

Gunther
It is with great sadness that we must say goodbye to little Gunter. Gunter came to us from an outlying animal control facility. However, much like a lot of puppies who end up there, Gunter's immune system was just too weak to deal with the harsh environment.
In the couple of days that we at APR had the pleasure of knowing Gunter, he won our hearts with his friendly and playful nature. He was a wonderful boy who will be greatly missed.

Herbie
We are saddened once again to say goodbye to a precious kitty who did not have the chance at happiness he so deserved. Herbie succumbed to having a severe virus that is easily preventable with a simple vaccine. Though he was vaccinated upon arrival at APR, it was much too late. We mourn another preventable loss of precious life. We will miss you Herbie.

Hoggie
After a long hard battle with heartworms and complications related to treatment, Hoggie has crossed over the Rainbow Bridge. His tiny body was just not strong enough to handle the ravages of this terrible disease. We are all very sad to lose this little guy but are comforted to know that he is no longer suffering. Hoggie was a darling dog and his joyful spirit will be missed by all.
Heartworm disease is a serious and potentially fatal condition caused by parasitic worms living in the arteries of the lungs and occasionally in the right side of the heart of dogs, cats and other species of mammals. Dogs and cats of any age or breed are susceptible to infection. Heartworm preventatives are extremely effective and when administered properly on a timely schedule, heartworm infection can be prevented!

Holly brought many smiles as she wheeled around the neighborhood in her Radio Flyer, because her heart was too weak to go very far on her own. In the 3 short years since she landed on our doorstep, Holly left a wealth of happiness and great memories. Holly was much loved by our family and is hopefully equally cherished in her new home. Until we meet again.

India
India was born August 11, 1989 in Centerville, Iowa.
My parents told me I could get a dog since I was so far from home (Atlanta) at Univ. of Iowa. So, she was by my side since I was a freshman in college and she was 6 weeks old.
She grew up near campus, swimming every day in the Iowa River, even if I didn’t want her to. She became a mascot of sorts for the U of I sculling team. She enjoyed frisbee, golf, soccer, chasing squirrels, and a good beer now and again.
She made the 1000 mile move to Atlanta in 1997, with her head out the window of a U-Haul truck and an optimistic grin on her face.
After moving to Atlanta, she made frequent trips to the Peachtree Hills duck pond, Piedmont Park, and enjoyed swimming in the Flint River at her grandparent’s farm in South Georgia.
She made quick friends of everyone she met and in 2000 when we had a scare with poison, I was told that she had more visitors than any dog that Pets are People, Too had ever seen...EVER. India was also full of mischief, and up until her very last day of life, made time to get into the garbage. I will miss stepping over her every time I get out of the shower, or tripping over her in the dark of night, but most of all her cheery disposition that she kept, even when she was suffering at the end.
She was an inspiration.

Jeremy
On Thursday, May 8th, Jeremy crossed over the Rainbow Bridge.
It is with great sadness that we are forced to say goodbye to this dear little dog. Jeremy's life of neglect had left his body unable to recover from the ravages of malnutrition and mange. Jeremy appeared to be healing from the terrible skin infection associated with the mange, however, he recently became very unsteady on his feet and quickly took a turn for the worst.
Our sweet little Jeremy will be greatly missed by all.

Kitty Carlisle
Kitty Carlisle was born sometime in June, 2006. She died unexpectedly in her home on June 8, 2008. Kitty Carlisle had had a rocky start in life and endured a constant upper respiratory condition. Although she received excellent medical care, she obviously coped with more troubles than we knew. She lived with us for just 15 months, and in that short time she managed to wreak havoc in her home. But there wasn’t a day we didn’t thank God she had come our way.
Kitty Carlisle loved Coffee Nips, batting them around like little hockey pucks. She could fly through the air and land perfectly on precariously high perches. She made it her mission to relieve tables, counters, bookcases, and desks of anything moveable. She played with pens, pencils, the computer mouse, small plastic bottles, and fluffy balls. She was the only cat I’ve ever known whose fur looked worse after she groomed it. She’d end up with tufts of hair flicked up all over her body. It was her spiked “do.” And when she groomed her best friend Eddie, he was spiked, too.
Kitty Carlisle was a joyful, affectionate little creature, and we just loved her dearly. We miss her as much as we loved her, and we are so grateful she embellished our lives and redecorated our home.

Lady
June – August 2006
Just three months old, Lady, a pit bull mix, suffered an untimely death in a crime that the Humane Society of the U.S. called “one of the most egregious, high-profile cases of animal cruelty in Georgia history”. The defendants were each sentenced to 10 years in prison for Lady’s death. Though Lady was on Earth just a brief time, she rallied animal lovers around the world to take a stand against cruelty to animals. Lady, your spirit lives on, and you will never be forgotten.

Leaf
Memories of Leaf, Kevin Munoz's little girl
Kevin always had a dog in the house growing up, but this is the first dog that was his. Though I never met Leaf, I know she was a very special girl.
She died suddenly due to a heartworm vaccine (an alternative to the monthly heartworm pill, which has now been taken off the market).
She's now in a place where no shadows fall, and I know she's pleased with all the flowers we leave for her on earth.
~Mandy Munoz, Kevin's wife
Leaf was one of the most (if not THE most) affectionate dogs I've ever known. And her extremely soft, fluffy coat of curly gray hair made her very easy to cuddle, which she loved to do. She was extremely well-behaved and patient with children and other dogs.
To this day I often think about Leaf, my first grand-dog, and I still miss her very much.

Libby
Libby gave us several wonderful years and she will be missed terribly, especially by her buddy, Tater. She had to have her own chair at the table and was always waiting at the door when we came home with big meows and a tumble and roll so that we could scratch her belly. She led a very healthy and normal life for many years, although her heart murmur shortened it, eventually causing heart failure. She passed away on 10/15/07. We will miss her funny little noises and Tater will miss their snuggle and play time. Miss Libby was loved by all and with us through thick and thin. We shall miss you, sweet girl.

Lido
Lido was my best buddy and constant companion. When I needed comforting, he was there. When it was bedtime, he propped his nose on the edge of the bed to say goodnight. He liked to run in his sleep - I think that was the only time in which he could catch a squirrel. He could entertain himself for a long period of time with an almost-empty jar of peanut butter, his favorite food. He loved to hop in the car for a ride, often going along on my weekend “donut run.” He taught me so much about unconditional love. Words cannot express how special he was or how much he was loved. He will be greatly missed.

I will miss everything about you including: watching you jump on top of the refrigerator to eat your supper; seeing you growl, hiss and spit at people you didn't like; watching you "rock out" while I played my accordion; and playing "kitty racquetball" with you on the stairs. You lived life on your terms and even if people didn't love you for it, they respected you. I know Mama Scruff and Papa Bill will keep you out of trouble in heaven.

We are sad to report that little Lovebug was born with a congenital defect that prevented her from getting the nutrition she needed to grow and thrive. No matter how much food this sweet kitten ate she couldn't gain weight. Blood work done at Paces Ferry Veterinary Clinic confirmed that Lovebug was not going to survive kittenhood. We wish to thank all the people who looked after her and all the people who wanted to adopt her. She had found a place in our hearts.

Lucky Dog
Lucky Dog was a very special pooch. Found wandering, hungry and homeless, he crossed his owner's path and she named him "Lucky Dog" because she vowed she would bring him back from the junkyard where he was found. That was in 1995 in Narita, Japan. Lucky made the long journey in the cargohold of a 747, thirteen hours to Chicago, a quick pass through customs and immigration, and then onto another plane to Atlanta. He first set eyes on Atlanta in February, 1995, and was eager to learn a new language and a new culture. In his new home, he ate the sofa, the wooden baseboards and managed to swallow a threaded needle and get it stuck in the back on his tongue. He stopped eating after that and ended up in the emergency clinic where an incredulous veterinarian extracted the needle, still threaded, from his throat. Lucky survived that and also treatment for heartworms, twice, during his first six months inthe U.S.
We never knew exactly what breed he was as the dogs in Japan are largely imported from abroad and often are not the typical breeds we see in the U.S. He had a wonderful bushy tail and a thick ruffle of fur around his neck and plumes of long hair that cascaded over the tops of his ears. We think he may have been a Finnish Spitz or something similar.
Lucky was loved dearly. In the end he became deaf and mostly blind. Then his mental functions slipped away until he didn't know where he was or who we were. He shuffled around aimlessly and was sometimes unable to stand without wobbling.
Lucky Dog has crossed the Rainbow Bridge, can see and hear clearly now and runs and chases leaves and birds as he once did. He will be greatly missed here but the many fond memories of his time with us will be cherished forever.

Lucy
We are sad to report that little Lucy succumbed to a malady that could so easily have been prevented but which was unfortunately not caught in time prior to her entering our program.
She fought to the end and enjoyed her newfound freedom, albeit shortlived, while she could. She most definitely found a place in our hearts and while just a little tyke, she had a huge spirit. Love is not measured in quantity but in quality! Lucy, you were very loved beyond the time you had with us!!!
